It’s time for a double feature that works as an accidental duology.

Centurion (2010) about the loss of the 9th legion, and The Eagle (2011) about the son of a 9th legion soldier reclaiming the company standard.

a metaphor for the beheading of our democracy

“... It’s an indication of an end phase, where people turn to rituals and odd beliefs,” says Leibniz Center for Archaeology archaeologist Detlef Gronenborn. “Then it breaks out in an orgy of violence. Then it stops, but it’s too late.”

Yes, who is more likely to regard the sacrifice of people as abhorrent than those who follow a religion centered on celebrating the sacrifice of a person?

Despite the hype for the Starfighter Star Wars movie I can’t seem to care. I want to care. I want to enjoy mainstream things. But Disney hasn’t convinced me that they support their artists after caving to online hate and cancelling so many projects.

My book is about the past obsessions with the Roman empire that shaped the world today:
- why we think of Rome a certain way,
- why it matters,
- and the many interpretations of Rome we dismiss.

It's basically a v fun history of (a lot of) Afro-Eurasia. Buy it here!

Movies like The Odyssey might not be as historically accurate as a textbook, but it’s better than having people ask AI for a hallucinated explanation.

Entertainment is how we get more people to discover real history. Besides, the cyclops isn’t historically accurate to begin with. #filmsky #history

It’s been a while since I watched Pompeii and I think I’m due for another viewing.

What I remember, aside from Kit Harrington’s abs, is that the movie stuck to its premise and had major characters consumed by the eruption. I respect that.
