Wow. The University of Chicago, a world-class institution whose humanities faculty in the past has included Homi Bhabha & Lauren Berlant & Ralph Ellison & Hannah freaking Arendt, is getting rid of basically every graduate department involving the acknowledgment that other cultures & languages exist.

It’s not just FLAS. It’s all the Title VI area studies centers. And dozens of labs & postdocs & research opportunities for undergrads funded by NSF and NIH grants. All gone. But the public won’t be aware of the actual consequences unless our leaders loudly & collectively explain to them the crisis.
Again, you cannot unplug 1/4-1/5 of an R1 university's budget & expect the same quantity or quality of "things" on campus. The math simply doesn't work. And pretending it does & we can uphold our "core values," & not talking loudly & publicly about how it doesn't, is not a strategy. It's madness.

Utterly demonic to leave people contemplating suicide unable to talk to someone who understands their problems. And I say “demonic” because it denies the centrality of the essential divine gift that is one’s own existence. Wish we had more funding and training for the hotline and not less.
Breaking: The Trevor Project received a stop-work order last night on its contract with the national 988 suicide prevention hotline. The Trump administration is eliminating the option for LGBTQ callers to the hotline to press 3 and connect with someone who specializes in LGBTQ mental health.

For all those who are planning to be out there tomorrow, remember that nonviolence is strategic, as below, but it is also a discipline and a spiritual practice. It is not “natural” for humans not to react to provocation, so it takes a bit of rootedness and a bit of work. Sing songs together.

I don’t think matching shamelessness with shamelessness is a winning strategy. Trump is authentically shameless. Let’s try being authentically honest. Because authenticity is actually the key.
You know why Trump never apologizes? Because it makes him look weak. But you want Dems to apologize for something a lot of people aren't even thinking about. Who is looking for this apology? Low information voters who vote for whoever seems strong? Liberals who want someone to fight the nazis? Who?

But that last bit doesn’t follow. I get the temptation, but it really starts to mess with your head if you take that step.
I’m thinking a lot about the relationship between disaffection and credulity. Some so-called postliberal Catholics feel so burned by the liberal order that they become absurdly credulous toward any opinion that opposes that liberal order. “The enemy of my enemy…must be telling the truth.”
