On April 5, 2010, the Upper Big Branch mine in our Coal River community exploded, killing 29 miners. The CEO of Massey Energy spent a year in prison for conspiring to violate safety requirements. In 2025, two miners have died within 5 miles of the disaster. Now Mine Safety offices are closing.

Here’s the Brushy Fork coal waste sludge dam operated by Alpha Metallurgical Resources on Coal River Mountain, Raleigh County, WV. It’s 2 miles from the toe of the dam to the tip of the lake, holds ~8 billion gallons, is higher than the Hoover Dam, & built over abandoned underground mines.
