In its role of protecting federal law enforcement officers, does the military commander have any discretion regarding whether to engage his/her troops? Put another way, if civilian law enforcement initiates an attack, and face resistance (Chicago 1968), what is the military's role?

Two questions come to mind:

Could the civilian law enforcement simply issue a standing request for military presence on all missions, due to "situational uncertainty"?

It is so pathetic that the institutions and people most financially able to withstand pressure from this administration are the ones who are capitulating. As per usual, it's those who have the least cushion who are standing up.
