Tolkien, however, wrote a more traditional epic based on earnestness and heroism. He basically wrote the medieval epic he wanted to to read. It seemed out of the place in the 1950s as well.

Tolkien expert Dr. Tom Shippey states that after WWI the modem form of writing that continues today is based on irony and cynicism-because of the horrible things that happened in the world wars.
