For me I'm fine with it in old cheesy horror because I was never truly invested to begin with, but if I actually like a character then 1 hour 40 minutes or 300+ pages of development only to end with a Fuck You They Die/Lose is still a slap in the face regardless of the media's message

I think one of the biggest reasons why I'm slowly shifting from Horror books to Fantasy is because I'm in the mood for catharsis more than anything

Its well within Horror's rights to do so but at the same time I'm so tired of "...and the evil won and everything was terrible forever, the end! :D"

Once you get the feel for how the subgenre works, it's kinda hard to care about Big Sword Jimbo when the moment he asks you to collect 5 whateverthefuckium for him you know he's 100% gonna be dead or comatose by at end
