Things I saw in #nature today. #hawk #beavers
Recent signs of fever activity. The bark has been stripped up and down both sides of the trunk. An up close look at the work of a beaver. The taller part of the trunk had fallen over right at the end of the cone formed on each side of the biting spot. A Cooper’s hawk waits patiently at the top of a tree. A few minutes after the shot, it swooped down into the scrubby grass, presumably catching its quarry. A view of the tree that has been gnawed by beavers. The bulk of the trunk leans over while the stump still stands upright, its pointy cone left after the beaver‘s work.

Mowing = #exercise

A monarch butterfly enjoys the nectar from a butterfly bush. It’s orange wings with black stripes and white dots are spread open as it clings to a cluster of small pink flowers.

Things I saw in #nature this week. #spider #moth
An orb weaver spider rests at the center of its web. The plump body is mostly light brown in color but with distinct patches of solid black, white and yellow. Its legs alternate between yellow and black segments running down the course of their length. The spiderweb shimmers against an olive green background, the color of the roof under which the spider built its web. A nighttime shot with flash of numerous moths sipping happily from a rotting tomato, never picked and so still hanging from the vine.

Things I saw in #nature today.
Four butterflies flutter among clusters of tiny blue flowers and long green leaves. A black widow spider is suspended upside down inside a small cavern of dried mud. It is tending to its web along with one of its orb-like sac of eggs. Its bright red splotch contrasts vividly with the rest of its solid black body and legs.

Somebody in this parking lot really loves #oralhealth.
A blue, disposable tooth flosser rests on the blacktop of a golf course parking lot. Some sort of white dental tool with a collection of filaments at one end that can squeeze between two teeth and scrub, lays sadly on blacktop, used and discarded like a too known n lover.

I saw a #frog today. #nature
A green tree frog compresses itself downward against the large green leaf of a corn plant. The same green tree frog, but the image is from further back to capture much more of the green in the garden.

More things I saw in #nature today. Praying Mantis. Swallowtail caterpillars.
The profile of a large praying mantis hanging upside down, its hind legs grasping onto the leaves of a tall, green corn plant. The praying mantis from the other side of the plant. It still hangs down. In this shot, the camera is further away to show the size of the mantis (8 inches, perhaps) and its ability to camouflage amid the corn leaves. A swallowtail caterpillar clings to the branches of a dill plant. Its coloration is a mesmerizing rotation of bright yellow, lime green, and black rows that run horizontally across its back. Two more caterpillars enjoy their time amongst the dill plant. The color pattern is slightly different on the one in the foreground, with more orange and white striping than the others.

Things I saw in #nature this weekend. Stick Bug. Hummingbird Moth.
I stick bug sits still on a concrete sidewalk. It is long with angular legs and two long antennae coming from its head. A large brown and gold moth hovers in front of a cluster of small purple flowers. Its wings vibrate as fast as a hummingbird’s.

First day of school mobile! During orientation, I asked students playfully what they hate about school, a list, and then promised that I would have all of it in place for the first day. Follow through matters! #education #teachers

#gardening Swallowtail caterpillars found the dill.
An upside down swallowtail caterpillar uses its cute puffy feet to cling to a slender branch of a dill plant. Three large swallowtail caterpillars cling to the branches of a dill plant. The caterpillars have a stunning tiger, like pattern of black and yellow stripes, running across their backs from their head down to their tail. A close-up of a single swallowtail caterpillar. And the answer is… red salsa! We made nine quarts in this first batch—a personal record. #gardening
Nine Ball quart-size canning jars, full of red salsa, sit on a blue and white striped towel. They were still warm the next day after a full night cooling under a blanket of towels.
