Climate change educator
Ecology professor at a small state university in New England.
Husband, father, grandfather. Dog dad.
To pretend that the world is not warming—as is now obvious from both observation and mountains of data—is foolish, heartless, and down-right stupid. Policy based on bad assumptions is bad policy, and it will hurt people.

In my humble opinion—and I do mean humble— climate change education at the university level must be about the intellect and facts, but also about the heart. If we think deeply but feel little, we will rationalize and do nothing.

What kind of future do you want, for yourself, for your grandchildren, for the world’s grandchildren?

What the hell, I am never going to be one of the cool kids anyway. Might as well save the world.

Beware of public figures who claim that climate change is not real. They know better. They really do. But they hope that you do not.

Stand up, speak up, and don't shut up.

Thinking back on 9th grade (1973-74 in my case), there were two classes that I am very glad were required at the time: Civics and Earth Science. I find them both very useful in 2025.

I do not care how long your family has been here or what language you speak at home. If you are a good person, then I will call you neighbor. If you are as good a neighbor to me as I will be to you, I will call you friend. If my child marries your child, I will call you family.

Climate change education is a righteous cause.

I do not regret the things I do not know, and I am willing to admit to them. I do regret the efforts I did not make, but should have.

If those with power stifle climate science and climate policies in government agencies and universities with federal grants, perhaps it is time for school teachers and professors at small colleges and universities to stand tall and speak up.

A mean and stupid old man feels the approach of mortality. Not capable of recognizing anything outside of his own resentments and solopsism, he is indifferent if human civilization goes down with him.

It is discouraging how pertinent the comments of Anne Frank are once again.

In March, I will present two online talks to students of Stamford High School (Connecticut) on Human Origins. The focus will be Mitochondrial Eve and our COMMON origins. The framing will be climate and and humanity. This was arranged by SHS teacher William Halmeck, WCSU graduate alumnus.

“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.”
