Writing Tip:
Get yourself a real physical calendar. Not something you have on your phone or laptop. Hang it up within eyeshot of your writing space. Plan times you want to write, and make sure you can see it from where you're sitting. This can be good motivation.

Writing Tip:
Never underestimate the value of getting a friend to read your work. A trustworthy friend, mind you. But having someone who will give you an unvarnished opinion about your work is worth their weight in solid diamond-studded gold.

Writing Tip:
Learn to write top-of-mind as long as you can. It's hard to do without the whole thing coming to a screeching halt. But the longer you can write in that headspace without losing control, the longer you can exist in a flow state when writing normally.

Writing Tip:
While it might not be for everyone, I recommend trying the dictation function a lot of word programs have. Some folks write better by speaking it out loud, and dictation programs have come a long way in the last few years. Edits still required, though.

If you can think of a character, you can make it exist somehow in D&D. The rules exist to facilitate this kind of creativity, not to prevent it. Just tell your GM what you want to make, and they'll usually be able to help/make it work. Within reason and the scope of the world, of course.

Just a little roleplaying tip for anyone new to D&D: You never have to engage if you don't want to. A good group will never force you to roleplay outside of your comfort zone. Sure, you might need to interact (it is an interactive game) but you should only get involved at your own pace.

A little less than an hour away from the next #CriticalRole episode. I gotta say, I've been a bit more hyped for this campaign than previous ones. Don't get me wrong, they were good, but there feels like there's something special in the air with this one. Couldn't tell you what.

One mechanic I love in a lot of JRPGs is meal prep. Getting a long-term buff every time you sit down to rest depending on which meal you cook is a nice system to dip your feet into without making players new to crafting feel like they're being overwhelmed with choices.

If you're going to have players discover recipes for crafting, make sure they're actually useful at that moment. It sucks to discover a recipe in the mid-game that would have only been useful in the early game. Worse is discovering a recipe where you can't get any ingredients yet.

The funny thing about crafting in RPGs is that crafting mechanics are often introduced long after players are able to find ingredients. Which creates a situation where the protag is just hoarding crafting supplies for a system they shouldn't even know exists yet.

A fun little tidbit for all you GMs out there: Any item can be cursed. Literally anything. That rusty sword in a merchant's bargain bin? Cursed. That strange ring you found in your pocket? Cursed. That breakfast you ate this morning? You're damn right it's cursed. Evil bacon and eggs.

Writing Tip:
Exit your scenes early. It can be far too easy to meander on a scene waiting for the right moment. Don't do that. The reader will notice. You can end a scene whenever you want to. Don't wait for an opening. Make one!

Had a player character at my table decide to scare off a demon by somehow summoning the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch (from Monty Python) into the game world due to some reality-warping shenanigans. Then, he rolled a crit fail. The player wasn't even mad when his character got vaporized.

Writing Tip:
Take a step back after you write something substantial. Walk away, even if only for five minutes. Revisit it only when the initial adrenaline has worn off. Give it a sober second look in the clear light of day. You'll notice things you didn't before.

A little tip for you new GMs and players. The phrase 'are you sure you want to do that?' Is not a random clarification. It's GM code for 'You're about to try steal the king's crown in front of hundreds of knights in the throne room and likely going to cause a party wipe. You sure?'

The strange thing is that I don't blame AI for the things they make. An AI is programmed to complete a task. It's just doing its job. I blame the human 'content creators' that are abusing this technology to create an easy/lazy path to content creation making it harder for the people actually trying.
November 13, 2025 at 12:04 PM
The thing about liking AI content (such as music) is that you're not actually liking something that a modern AI is making. They're not actually making it. They're taking someone else's work, shuffling it around a bit and claiming credit. So what you're really liking is that original creator's stuff.

I'm just spitballing here, but if one youtube account is releasing multi-hour music tracks daily with a single piece of artwork for each 1-3 hour video., it's possible that... I dunno... that account is using AI generated content. Just saying. It's a possibility.

Writing Tip:
If it doesn't make sense for a character to do that one thing you need for the plot to happen, don't just shoehorn in a reason and have them do it anyway. Ask yourself why that is. There might be another direction your plot can go here instead.

Writing Tip:
Sticking the landing in a scene is one of the hardest parts of writing. Sure, your scene might be awesome, but if the narrative faceplants at the end, that's not what everyone is gunna talk about. Get out early, keep it brief, and end on a high note.

Writing Tip:
Make your own 'writing music' playlist as soon as you can. Stock it to the brim with music you've ever used while in a writing flow. Genre doesn't matter for this one. You might want ones for specific scenes, though. Have a separate one for that!

Writing Tip:
That favorites bar on your browser isn't just for show. You come across a piece of music you LOVE to write to? Put it in a folder on your favorites bar. Find inspiration for your writing? Save it for later! Store everything you need for easy reference.

When you're crafting a world for your campaign, don't be ashamed about creating a lore tidbit your characters won't care about. Even if they don't ever come across it, that tidbit is for you, and you care. So enjoy creating those hyper-specific lore dumps.

If you really want to step up your D&D combat, get yourself a crit deck. Having a truly random effect occur by drawing cards for your crits can create some amazingly chaotic moments. Bonus points if you have some wild magic in there as well. There are some amazing decks out there.

There comes a point as a GM where your player's idea for a character and some lore point in your crafted world are going to overlap. Unless it's an important plot point, it's often better to ditch that lore tidbit and reshape things to make it fit better for the player. It works better.
