Grandfather emigrated post ww1 from the French/ German border region (Alsace). Worked the fields for a few dollars a week plus a basket full of vegetables and eggs to feed his children. Three generations in, we've got doctors, teachers, a lot of engineers, etc. Tell me immigration doesn't work.

I remember my dad laughing about Senator Dan Inouye being caught on a hot mike during the Watergate hearings saying "what a liar" then going on air to correct it to "lawyer, I said lawyer"!
