My ex-gf and I had a toy poodle for the dog's last five years. He died in 2020 aged 18. He was a firecracker! One time we agreed it was good he couldn't talk. It might have been a series of grievances! What happened to my human family and who in hell are you people!!

I don't think it is unique in any way. A lot of people go through it. In my case, it took a close friend challenging my beliefs and assumptions and offering a differing perspective. And me being open-minded to realize she was much more correct.

I will say that up to age 25 [40 years ago now] I had Libertarian leanings -- and then realized I had no real perspective on life experience due to my privilege.
