I'm just settling down to read this. I don't read much crime fiction but the opening is gripping and I can already tell it's going to be a page-turner.

(I was happy to find this lovely hardback copy in my local library.)

@robdrummond.bsky.social had the audience thinking hard about spoken language with a captivating keynote #VoiceNE today.

Our librarian does a great job of arranging enticing book displays around significant events. It always draws the students in and sets us up for booky chats in English lessons.
There's also a booklist list we send home to push those chats even further.

Well, I woke up to this.
It's where I live and work.
Labour only 444 votes more than Refm.
Northumberland Council elections north of here are just as depressing.

Two nice things about the local library today.
1. Upstairs was packed with school students using the space to revise. Downstairs was busy with toddler rhyme time.
2. I found three books on my wishlist.

Wandering in Oxleas Wood (London) with my friend & his dog during the solar eclipse this morning. Lovely. Not been here before.

I've just finished Minor Detail by Adania Shibli. I read it bc I wanted to grow my understanding of the Palestinian experience post-1948. Wow, it's sophisticated & powerful. I can't stop thinking abt it. 2 contrasting narrators, v tense, captures life in Occupied Territ. (content warning👇🏽) #BookSky

Also, this.
The all important social dimension of literacy acquisition - it appears audio can be shared & enjoyed in a family setting. 4

It's costly and there are some challenging logistics so we aren't there yet. I can definitely see how it can engage more reluctant readers.

This graphic is thought-provoking, suggesting audio could be a way to harness literacy/reading enjoyment across harder to reach groups. 3

... the main headline is that more children and yp enjoy listening (audio books/podcasts) than reading.

I don't think this is too surprising. Lots of yp at my sch say they find books online, read or listen digitally. Our librarian has explored options for adding e-books/audio platforms. 2

Starting half-term with an exc page-turner, 'James' by Percival Everitt.
Interesting that language, identity & oppression is a central theme. Enslaved characters codeswitch to survive, always alert to the danger of sounding 'white' yet, in private, deliberately transgress imposed lang boundaries.

It's a stunner. One of my fave reads this year.
For a y7 audience craving wintry murder mysteries I'd suggest this diverse collection of short stories. And for older readers who enjoy ghost stories, Jeanette Winterson's Night Side of the River is characteristically subversive & interesting.

This is a brill YA thriller, new on the shelf in our sch library but already v popular. The narrative switches between police interview transcripts & flashbacks from differing povs. It's a good one to recommend to murder mystery fans. Set in winter ❄️. Y8 upwards.

familial links to colonial history.

My encounter with the Whitehaven coast was radically altered by reading Our Island Stories.

I hope this little🧵gives a sense of how the book uncovers colonial Britain in the present.

It's a powerful, compelling read.

Finally, the handsome sandstone St Nicholas' Church where Corrine and her walking partner, writer Peter Kalu, uncovered archival evidence of many local Black citizens living in and around Whitehaven.

I was moved & humbled by Peter's story & how this walk affected him, as someone with ...

Unnervingly, there's a direct line between Lowther Castle & the port. I stood by it and looked straight down the road. It's exactly as @corinnefowler.bsky.social describes - 'arrow straight....a statement of the family's dominance.'

Also in the town, Lowther Castle. The landowning Lowther family accrued their wealth through coal & transatlantic trading. Sir James Lowther invested in the East India Company & Royal African Company. Meanwhile, Fowler notes, many Whitehaven residents suffered poverty and disease.

Then, the town itself. Georgian townhouses speak of the prosperity that was brought to some people in Whitehaven via coal, tobacco trading & human trafficking. Tangier Street sits in the midst.

A compass etched into the ground orientates the viewer out to sea, in directions of colonial trade - West Indies or Virginia.
November 24, 2024 at 10:22 AM
It's hard to ignore bc on benches along the quay there are numerous plaques commemorating the transatlantic, colonial trades in sugar, tobacco etc
November 24, 2024 at 10:22 AM
In the harbour area, there's a quay named after the lucrative trade in sugar. Looks benign, until you stop to really think about what this means as a statement of Britain's complicity in enslavement and plantations.

The outer harbour in Whitehaven was deep enough for these big ships to dock.
