I ... was also there and I would posit that my kids, for instance - in their 20s - are not on FB and don't want to be. They're TikTok and YouTube first. And they prefer video; I think it's at least partly generational.

IDK, I hear you as someone who loves the written word, but in my experience people under let's say 35 are vertical video- and story-first. It's remarkable.

And then came the internet to unbundle everything. Smartphones put the internet in everyone's pocket. The bill for that sweet public money from Wall Street started coming due, and the way to keep margins up was to cut costs. And here we are. Hearst won, which is better for Dallas.

Getting acquired by 'good' chains (Knight papers, etc.) that had gone public was sound business practice. Times Mirror, once a pretty big conglomerate, threw off massive profits and kept acquiring. PM papers died. Mergers - Timeses and Heralds became Times-Heralds - created local ad monopolies. 2/
