Some crabby process shots 🦀 The jar was thrown then altered into an oval shape using a darting technique in the floor. I learned a lot by throwing everything at this piece (a lot of what not to do 😅).

Here’s the first piece that started my jar series 🦀 Based on Portunus sanguinolentus I’ve seen in Hawaii (kuahonu/blood-spotted swimming crab). Unlike the newer jars this one is big at a width of 11in/28cm. ~Lance

Shearwater in process. Stylizing the head took a bit to get right. Was getting a little chickeny 🐔. I experimented with underglaze brushstrokes to make the feather patterns. Almost thinking I shouldn’t have glazed it.

Seabird jar. Specifically a wedge-tailed shearwater or 'ua'u kani in Hawaiian. This bird makes a loud moaning noise (Ooooeer!). I know because it scared me at night before 😱. They are monogamous and nest in burrows. ~Lance

Bitter Melon Jar. I use to hate these when I was younger. They’ve grown on me and inspired this lumpy vessel. I mean, look at the undulating warts and the natural color gradients! How could I not want to make one?

When creating my ceramic pieces I usually start with the form first, then work the surface design within its boundaries. I love figuring out how each petal and leaf fits with the curves, it’s one of my favorite parts of the process 💖

Look how buoyant she is! This beauty of a croc has been added to the tubby jar club. This green glaze kept crackling on pieces (it wasn’t suppose to) so I decided to utilize it here on a crocodile 🐊 🏺

One more shark and it’s a tiger shark! This is the last of the ceramic shark jars (jarks?) so far. I’ll glaze the top portion over the spots/stripes with blue and after firing it should meld together for a more natural look🤞
