Using shared metadata formats and standard identifiers ensures that information is described consistently so different systems can 'talk' to each other #metadatamatters

#MetadataMatters - Ruth Elder (University of York) commented that to may be quite 'sobering' for libraries to see the extent of their poor quality records.
Legacy metadata issues can severely impact upon discoverability & interoperability, but libraries rarely have time/capacity to tackle it
It also helps to identify parts of your data (metadata) that need attention - ie the records that need upgrading to ensure that they are not falsely flagged as unique when compared to NBK data

Are you a cataloguer or interested in cataloguing and have a view on whether LCSH is fit for purpose in a UK context? CILIP MDG @cilipmdg.bsky.social are hosting a Worldcafe event (a big meeting basically!) to discuss ideas at Wellcome Library in London Wed 26th Nov www.cilip.org.uk/events/Event...
CILIP: the library and information association

Great to hear that Canadian librarians are already mobilising on this issue. We are hopeful that UK librarians will likewise engage with rethinking subject analysis and controlled vocabularies in order to better serve our user communities #ethics #cataloguing #metadata #wordsmatter #metadatamatters

#Canadian #metadata practitioners are networking, discussing shared infrastructure, data repatriation, & data sovereignty + reaching out to one another to explore what we might do here with controlled vocabulary built on our labor. It’s slow & complicated legally, organizationally, and technically.
@cilipmdg.bsky.social invites participants to a WorldCafe Event @wellcomecollection.bsky.social on the topic of Subject Analysis & LCSH within the current metadata landscape.

Wed 26th November 2025 11:00-16:00

Fran has been demonstrating Linked Data enrichment using OpenRefine on a some bibliographic data - alas we have run out of time for more... but MDG will be running more events and training on Linked Data in the future.
So turning bibliographic data into Linked Data should mean that users can navigate more easily between related resources and discover new, unexpected connections.
It should also make library data easier to integrate into other systems such as major web services.
In semantic graph databases, the linking of disparate sources and formats enables the inference of new knowledge out of existing facts.
We move away from a flat record structure to an integrated web of information.
And the benefits? Well, in a truly Linked Data environment the information silos that exist between various formats are broken down. As a result, data integration and browsing through complex data become easier and much more efficient.
More complex queries can be asked of the data.
MarcEdit can do this for you! It can connect to RDA vocabularies and Library of Congress authorities id.loc.gov
In a traditional MARC cataloguing environment we can begin to become 'Linked Data ready' by adding URIs into certain MARC fields that describe controlled entities such as authorised name headings for People, Places and Things.
Eg 1XX, 7XX, 6XX & 3XX fields.
How does this link to RDA?
The RDA Registry contains the classes and properties.
The RDA Toolkit contains the elements and entities, distinguishing between relationship entities and attribute entities.
These can be used to create triples.
Linked Data editors are available:
Sinopia sinopia.io
Marva bibframe.org/marva/editor
Both have sandboxes and require a sign-in
Now to the practical element!
Fran demonstrates bringing all of the Linked Data components together.
First define the ontology: the Classes and subClasses of Objects and Subjects, plus their Properties, Domains, Ranges.
Then build the relationship statements between the Objects and Subjects.
