EGM October 1999:

People really, REALLY wanted to believe that Project Ares (Eternal / Skies of Arcadia) was going to be a Phantasy Star revival, but it was not; the actual Phantasy Star revival two years later was actually a Diablo clone. Things might have been very different.

The fall 1999 print ad for Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast cuts together screens from in front of Twinkle Park, then in front of the Hotel, and then all the way into the "At Dawn" segment of Speed Highway, as if they are a single contiguous scene

boy I hope somebody got fired for that blunder

the greatest lie the devil ever told was that Sonic Adventure was going to run at 60fps (EGM #112, 1998)

also I'm still a diehard Diehard GameFan fan, but EGM clearly went out of their way to hire somebody with real art degrees to do these impeccably crisp layouts.

Shenmue II US DC print advertisement from EGM, November 2001. The switch to Xbox-exclusive was so last-minute, it's hard to believe US DC copies weren't already being pressed.

Everything humanity knows about Jump Runner is encompassed in this image. It never came out anywhere.

Hidden & Dangerous did eventually release on Dreamcast, but it wasn't Armed & Dangerous, so history doesn't care

I-Spy Operation Espionage, despite the clumsy title, came to US Dreamcast.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine never left the PC and N64.

In 1994, the Sonic 3 air attack is called the "Insta-Shield" despite not actually functioning as a shield

In 2022's Sonic Origins, the move is renamed "Double Spin Attack" despite now functioning as a shield

Furballs released on Dreamcast under the name Fur Fighters, with an enhanced PS2 port titled Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge released in June 2001. One of the opening levels of this game takes place on the roof of the world trade center, which features this games store downstairs. Lots to unpack here.

Evil Dead: Ashes 2 Ashes was eventually released under the name Evil Dead: Hail to the King, probably because putting a "2" in the title of a game that is not a sequel generally looks pretty dumb.

It is exactly 25 years ago

Sega has just released a quirky new game with minimal localization changes at a budget launch price with ad-free, cost-free, and bug-free multiplayer right out of the gate

"the 21st century is amazing," you say

"it's only going to get even better from here," you say
