This is a good resource for understanding demand and generation. Storage is used for surplus renewable energy (usually gathered overnight) and released when demand is high rather than fire up the gas turbines.

Indeed. By comparison Drax power station outputs about 4000MW (4GW), and peak UK demand is about 45GW. UK nuclear plants output about 1GW each. Gas plants output around 0.5GW although some can be up to 3x that.
