Imo a part of the reason for left of centre despair in the face of Orbanism/Trump/the AFD (etc) being popular is that these things are so comically corrupt, inept, and evil - and all the defences of them and attempts to make them plausible so laughably bad - that losing to them feels nihilistic.

Oh great… the same new PIs who were hit by a global pandemic just as they started are now trying to renew their grants and get tenure when the funding agencies are actively being destroyed. But sure.... that COVID tenure clock extension reeaaallly made a difference....

This was my experience as well. NPIS has been a rock in these turbulent times.
I started my group in 2020, in lockdown, without induction/mentorship bc of the chaos of the pandemic. New PI slack single-handedly kept me sane & grounded, & reminded me I wasn't alone.
