Imo a part of the reason for left of centre despair in the face of Orbanism/Trump/the AFD (etc) being popular is that these things are so comically corrupt, inept, and evil - and all the defences of them and attempts to make them plausible so laughably bad - that losing to them feels nihilistic.

Oh great… the same new PIs who were hit by a global pandemic just as they started are now trying to renew their grants and get tenure when the funding agencies are actively being destroyed. But sure.... that COVID tenure clock extension reeaaallly made a difference....

This was my experience as well. NPIS has been a rock in these turbulent times.
I started my group in 2020, in lockdown, without induction/mentorship bc of the chaos of the pandemic. New PI slack single-handedly kept me sane & grounded, & reminded me I wasn't alone. BREAKING: Graduate workers at Duke University have won a union.

2,500 student-workers have chosen to organize with Duke Grad Union, with 88% voting yes.

They now form the first graduate union at a private university in the South.
