I think it makes it more difficult for people to observe and acknowledge faults in the church too. When you’re being attacked for your beliefs it’s easy to lean into groups that make you feel safe if you’re not comfortable thinking for yourself. Evangelicals know this and take advantage of it.

It’s crazy to me when I see extreme religious people jumping to atheism getting mad at people for believing in higher power because I was never crazy enough to believe what you believed. I left a church because they said gays are going to hell but I still maintained faith.
