Darrell Issa considering a move to Texas to run for Congress instead of running in CA48?!? Prop 50's Democratic gerrymander working in unexpected ways!

Gave a talk at U. of Copenhagen for Thanksgiving. While there, visited Borgen (the Danish Parliament), watched a @fckobenhavndk.bsky.social game, and took a very cold ride up the @tivolicph.bsky.social gardens ferris wheel! #Hygge #Thanksgiving #Denmark

Had a great time presenting new research on policy diffusion & legislative behavior at @ucph.bsky.social & served on a dissertation assessment defense. Bonus for professional trip to University of Copenhagen in the early winter - visiting the Christmas markets!

Decision states that evidence exists that Texas racially gerrymandered, which is unconstitutional

Enjoyed discussing redistricting wars, voting rights, and communities of interest today at Widener Delaware Law School. As a redistricting nerd, I was energized but the legal audience found the relative lack of national guardrails normatively depressing.

There's a map for that.

FOX News has incorrectly labeled Utah & SC as Democratic gerrymanders (!) even though their states are R trifectas. Utah's congressional map is 4-0 R; and SC 6 R-1 D. #redistricting

I think they have mis-read or mis-informationed your data, @samwang.bsky.social

What is the effect of primary election system reform on legislatures? At #EPSA @Charles III U. in Madrid, @alcocerjj.bsky.social and I theorize and show election reforms increase ideological diversity in legislatures, with findings strongest among Democrats. #EPSA2025

He theorizes how institutions, elections, & race constrain legislators of color and affect policymaking. He is the only scholar, to my knowledge, using advanced causal inference methods (SDID & synthetic control) to answer questions about legislatures, race & representation. Quoting his diss.:

Dr. Jose Alcocer's dissertation is significant. In part of his dissertation, published in JREP, Jose argues and finds that legislators of color engage in greater co-sponsorship of bills in Congress to offset bias against legislators of color that occurs via bill sponsorship @cambridgeup.bsky.social

Huge congrats to @alcocerjj.bsky.social! Dr. Jose Alcocer successfully defended his PhD dissertation "Three Essays on Race, Gender, & Institutional Constraints Shaping Representation in U.S. Legislatures."

In her dissertation, looking at Latino and white voters, she tests her arguments with original survey data, experiments, focus groups, & quantitative text analysis. Her research has significant implications for thinking about how to reduce polarization in the US. Quoting her dissertation below:

Dr. Raquel Centeno's dissertation is significant. She theorizes and finds that affective polarization
is a phenomenon characterized not just by ideological misperceptions about the other party, but also by fears among voters about potential losses to status for their racial group.

Big congrats to Dr. @rcenteno.bsky.social! Raquel Centeno successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation "The Racial Undercurrents of Partisan Polarization." Thanks Jane Junn, @yesthatabbywood.bsky.social, @efrenpolipsy.bsky.social! @usc.edu @dornsife.usc.edu
