One great era ends, and another begins. After seven years, I'm leaving IndieWire to take on a role as head of digital engagement at the Tampa Bay Times, a publication I grew up with and that first put me on the path to journalism. I start January 5.

Look who visited @indiewire.com’s “St. Pete bureau”! Our own Marcus Jones! He was in town for a few days visiting family, and meeting with me was a fun bonus. Took him to the Birchwood Canopy and the Don CeSar.

A special place. That room right above the arch was my freshman dorm room at Northwestern. Visited on this trip as part of my annual meetings being on the ⁦‪School of Communication’s board of advisors.

20 years have passed, and 20 students after me have lived there. Wishing them the best.

But put it this way: Many other actors have done their own version of Woody Allen-type characters. Post-acting career Woody Allen himself has written “Woody Allen-type characters” into his movies, even making Scarlett Johansson one.

But who’s ever been able to replicate Diane Keaton?

Wrote this for @indiewire.com yesterday:

When you picture Diane Keaton, the first image that comes to mind is probably her wearing a broad black hat, vest, and tie as the title character in “Annie Hall.” It was a look she often replicated in real life.

Glimpsed outside on the street lamp outside my house: an osprey!

In the car when I took this… as I pulled forward he flew off. Must have been a six-foot wingspan, and a dead rodent was in his talons.

Happy 50th anniversary to "Jaws," one of the greatest of all American movies and still Steven Spielberg's best, in my opinion. I wrote these remarks eight years ago for @indiewire.com's weekly critics survey (even before I'd actually joined the IndieWire staff), and I stand by them.

Here's something fun. I'm a talking head in this new documentary about Bob Hope and World War II on PBS. The crew from The World War II Foundation came to my house for a few hours last year to interview me, and I was happy to share my expertise about Hollywood's role in the war effort.

"Revenge of the Sith" being re-released is a good reminder that I picked Ian McDiarmid's performance as Palpatine in that film as one of the 50 Best Performances of the 2000s for IndieWire last year. He could not be better in this.

If I look blissfully happy here, it's because I really had a blast hanging out with Harmony Korine at the Sarasota Film Festival and interviewing him onstage before a screening of his new film "Baby Invasion."

I'm deeply moved to hear that Johnny Mathis is retiring from live performance as of this May at the age of 89. I attended his February 8 concert in Clearwater and captured this heavenly performance of "Shenandoah." Truly, one of the most beautiful things you could ever listen to.

Moderating this Q&A in Tampa for A24's "Warfare" with D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Michael Gandolfini, and director Ray Mendoza was an absolute pleasure. Ton of cinephiles here — the theater was packed.

Why doesn’t Elon Musk show respect for his office by wearing the Corno Ducale, the traditional headgear of the Doge of Venice? Why?!
March 5, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Petition: As long as DOGE exists, Elon Musk should have to wear the Corno Ducale, the traditional headgear of the Doge of Venice.

It's a matter of showing respect to the office!

"He was a young man and ghosty stories about the tall hills didn't scare him none. He was looking for a Hawken gun, .50 caliber or better. He settled for a .30, but damn, it was a genuine Hawken... you couldn't go no better."

So excited to share my Top 10 films of 2024! This is the first time since 2009 and "Up" that an animated movie topped my list, with the honor this time going to "Flow," maybe the greatest cat movie ever made.

6:00, bright sunlight, and the trick or treaters have already arrived!

(So glad to be sharing a view of my front door when it’s NOT covered with sandbags!)

Sigh. We have battened down the hatches, sandbagged the front and garage doors, and evacuated 100 miles to a fortress hotel. So lucky that our house was spared any damage from Helene. Will that be the case now? Well, we tried to do everything we can to prevent that.

Stay strong, Tampa/St. Pete.
