I think Zohran Mamdani making his focus about affordable living is the right way. You start with that and everything else starts to flourish. People should be able to live in the city where they work. People should be able to put money and innovation and care back into their community.

For me, it was just a short period of time that allowed me to get on my feet. And it was incredibly inspiring having my neighbors all be dancers, musicians, sculptors, painters, architects, etc. But for the community, it did so much and continues to.

And the thing about that is it worked. Creatives having affordable housing allowed them to create. Money was spent downtown, businesses were built (by a lot of the artists). There was community and collaboration. New buildings were built. It’s a place full of culture.
