A cherished childhood memory

When I was 14 I went to a friend's house in December, everyone was wearing holiday sweaters and his mom made cookies while (seriously) a train went around the tree and then I walked home to find my dad all in black decorating our tree listening to a Bruce Cockburn Christmas record.

Also cut to a Billy Joel song that he wrote FOR the show completely on his own. He liked the show, wrote the song, sent to them and was like "so, do you want it or" and they made it into a ballet

Wait, then what the hell was I watching?

I've really come to think of Star Wars as, at best, a monkeys paw situation. You make a good one and it's all anyone wants to talk to you about for the rest of your life, you make a bad one and God help you. I love SW and Soderbergh but it's probably a win/win that they stay separate.

I'd bet money that this cycle of movies is about Lex's redemption the same way the Guardians are about Rocket becoming the center of the team. I think Gunn identifies with angry dickheads who figure it out late in life. Also, Hoult was rumored to be the Clark runner up.

I'm listening...

Thanks for reposting, I somehow missed it before. Do you know if there are any good articles about just what the hell happened with the second one?

It's a helpful qualifier. Like "leading second grade intellectuals think I've cream is an appropriate choice for dinner."

One of the things, I think, that the Indiana Jones movies got right about the Nazis is that there were simultaneously Three Stooges level idiots AND extremely dangerous. Profoundly stupid people are just as capable of doing profound damage as anyone else.

My oldest friend regularly spent time with relatives in Finland as a kid, when he told me that Fins and Swedes fucking HATE each other it was a cornerstone in my "oh, okay, this is ALL bullshit" education. The only folks we hate almost as much as people who don't look like us are people who do.

There are three Alien movies in our house. The first two and Covenant. Romulus lives in a makeshift apartment over the garage. The rest we don't talk about.

Sigh. A real good news bad news situation then.

I was looking up information about the Parker movie last week because I was inhaling all the Second Sight Nice Guys sups and didn't even see a release date. Is it getting any kind of theatrical release?

I mean, if memory serves, Lilith's mere presence in Seattle gave Daphne crippling migraines.

I cannot tell you what a relief that is to see.

I think Barry Sonnenfeld said he was MAGA or something. Which I always hoped was a joke.

It's long been a dream of mine to see a billion dollar action movie whose climax involved the participation of a woman who looked uncannily like my mother in law.

I've always kind of thought the story in prequels takes place almost entirely in the background. It's way more about how the different planets and ships and costumes go from being distinct and separate from one another to the grey brutalist utilitarian sameness of the Empire.

My friend wrote this article. Pretty sure that makes me famous.

Yeah, I think I watched it twice maybe, and I don't know if I didn't care for it the second time, but I definitely remember thinking "Wait, WHY am I doing this to myself again?" Nothing like a movie where someone drinking themselves to death is the third worst thing that happens.

I think it's kinda weird that Leaving Las Vegas is apparently an Automatic Favorite? Like, he's obviously great in it, but that movie's a killer. I wouldn't put it ahead of Adaptation or Face/Off or even Honeymoon in Vegas (which I adore).

The prequels are the adult realization that all these systems that seemed so reassuring as a kid are kind of fucked up and the parent that awed and terrified you is just a broken down dude with a respiratory issue.

And I like how it's deliberately about undermining a lot of the perspective of the OT. The OT is basically a kids view of the world, where there's good and bad and your parents are the most powerful people in the world.
