Is it just me, or is this statement by Dean Harriss MLC a deluded belief:

“Mr Harriss said he believed the government's promised measures would help to address state debt, while attempting to accommodate more debt for the stadium.”

We already pay as much rent as mainlanders, food is more expensive and wages are lower. Going to big events isn’t possible for most. We’re becoming one of those tourism destinations where the locals can’t afford to do anything. The stadium will massively accelerate that process.

Tasmania is about to enter a period of fiscal austerity it hasn't experienced before. Hospitality businesses near the stadium are expecting some sort of economic nirvana. They better hope mainlanders are cashed up. Tasmanians using the stadium will be lucky to afford a packet of chips. #politas

Makes me wonder if this was the whole point of the stadium, an excuse for extreme austerity measures that were already looming due to the financial malpractice of the current run of Liberal governments. Now the voterbase of the Liberal party will defend it as for the greater good...of the stadium.

I have never seen anyone even attempt to explain why a stadium requires a prime waterfront spot. In what way is it enhanced by having sweeping river views?

The people inside it can't see out. It doesn't have many windows. They're watching the footy, they don't care about the scenery behind them.
"During her marathon speech, Webb dismantled the government’s case for the stadium, declaring it would 'irrevocably ruin' Hobart’s heritage waterfront."

Thank you, @megwebb-mlc.bsky.social. Glad there are some MLCs who take the responsibilty seriously. #politas

Yes, this is entirely the case.
In a time when governments need to learn, they continually demonstrate that they have learned exactly nothing. Government is about being the custodian of the well-being of 26 million people - this is not custodianship, it's incompetence bordering on negligence.

So she's agreed to back it based on a range of "safeguards" the government has promised. Have to say that's pretty gullible of her. This government has told lie after lie when it comes to the stadium. Many promises broken. Putting her trust in the government is foolhardy. #politas
I will say I don't blame her. She should never have been put in such a position.
The character of Hobart will be changed forever. Very sad. #politas
Bec Thomas will support the stadium, so that's that. I am not surprised, as she represents the area of Glenorchy. Quite a footy mad constituency. So we get a stadium, a huge debt that will take decades to pay off, continued poor health, education, and housing outcomes. Nice one, Tasmania. #politas
