For @soundspheremag.bsky.social I took a look at how the festival and awards season films have the connective tissue of grief and unpack it in their own unique ways.

Big week of interviews so apologies for the spam. Spoke with Ballad Of a Small Player screenwriter Rowan Joffe about bringing Lawrence Osborne's work to life. The film is on Netflix now.

Catching up on a Mike Leigh blindspot (on Netflix) and boy oh boy what a film, instantly near the top of the one's I've seen.

Had a brilliant chat with the brilliant trio, Say She She a couple of weeks ago. The full write up is now live in @clashmusic.com. Urge people to check out their back catalogue and especially Cut & Rewind.

Deliver Me From Nowhere isn't the only Bruce Springsteen release coming out. There's a comprehensive reissue of Nebraska with the fabled electric sessions. Took a look at it for @clashmusic.com.

One of my favourite films from LFF this year was The Secret Agent. A towering performance from Wagner Moura, who I hope gets plenty of awards season love. Full review for @spybrary.bsky.social.

Another #LFF review for @flickeringmyth.bsky.social. This time it's for Bradley Cooper's Is This Thing On? Loosely inspired by John Bishop's life. It's his most intimate film with one of Will Arnett's best performances and great work from Laura Dern.

Another LFF review. For @moviemarker.bsky.social one of my most anticipated of the whole fest - Sentimental Value which for the most part more than lived up to it. This will be a huge awards player. Can't wait to revisit at Xmas. A great role for Stellan.

Playing today at LFF is Kelly Reichardt's art heist subversion The Mastermind featuring another wonderful turn from Josh O'Connor. Here's my full review for @flickeringmyth.bsky.social, also chatted to Rob Mazurek about its sublime jazz-infused score.

Out next Friday, I had an absolute ball with One Battle After Another. Pulls off some insane genre mashups and things PTA hasn't done to date with ease. Full thoughts for @theupcoming.bsky.social.

With Superman still flying high in cinemas for @radiotimes.bsky.social I took a look at why the franchise is ripe for a great video game adaptation. With the success of Spider Man and the Arkham games pretty insane we haven't had one sooner.

One of my fave films on Iplayer. Never gets old.

Not overly familiar with Spoon (keen to get more into them). What are some essential albums?

Had a good time with Phoenician Scheme. I think it's a better use of Wes Anderson's ensemble than his last couple and nice to see him return to genre. Has all the usual charms and Michael Cera is a terrific addition. @moviemarker.bsky.social.

For TechAdvisor, I took a look at why Fallout would have been a more satisfactory end point for the Mission: Impossible franchise. A stronger 2 part story with possibly the series' best villain and a high point for action films in the 21st Century.

I felt MI8 was one of the most frustrating of the franchise. It has two jaw dropping set pieces that are some of the best in the series but the first hour is pretty preposterous in places and it all feels cobbled together. Review for @theupcoming.bsky.social.

Poker Face Season 2 drops later this week. Here's my review for @flickeringmyth.bsky.social. Will also have some features on it for TechAdvisor. It's a stellar follow-up, well worth the wait with some killer guest stars (literally) once again.

My full Andor Season 2 review is now live in @radiotimes.bsky.social. It's an absolute triumph that builds to a brilliant conclusion, perfectly setting up Rogue One. It's a different beast to S1 but builds on so much of the groundwork laid there.

Andor Season 2 really delivers and will be in the mix for the best show's of the year and easily one of the finest pieces of Star Wars on the big or small screen. Every interaction and action has weight and the narrative structure works wonderfully. Review following for @radiotimes.bsky.social.
