It goes against all the wiring of their national psyche. They’re the Avengers! Maverick! Rocky vs Ivan Drago! But now they’re betraying old allies, siding with dictators, crashing the world economy, invading Greenland etc - ie pure villain energy. Not sure they’re ready for the hate that’ll unleash…

And better still, it puts the US on the back foot. It either forces them back to the negotiating table. Or - at the very least - it makes it all the harder for them to side with Russia militarily the future (which I think is an undervalued possibility). As this is no longer a "proxy" war.

The result? This instantly plants a flag in the ground - literally - that Russia are no longer dealing implicitly with EU interests.
If/when they fire upon Ukrainian territory, it will now be an explicit attack on European troops, European assets and an EU member. Let's call Putin's bluff.

But it also means EU companies setting up inside the Ukraine as soon as possible - a commercial occupation, if you like. And one backed up with "peacekeeping forces" and increased military aid.
