Beyond absurd. It’s extreme authoritarianism. These police should be arresting rapists & crooks, not neglecting those duties to spend time arresting citizens standing against genocide.

This is an affront to our civil liberties, and will make the lives of minorities even more difficult and dangerous.

Great thread, but both things are true. Centuries of internalised imperialism become overt when the majority's economic situation worsens; the economically comfortable and imperial-leaning are given the permission to say the quiet bit out loud @davidwearing.bsky.social @zackpolanski.bsky.social
Let me elaborate my disagreement with @zackpolanski.bsky.social in a 🧵. The scenes on our streets are not "the consequences of decades of austerity" but of centuries of racism propagated by the British ruling classes to rationalise the social order they have constructed at home and abroad.
I'm genuinely grateful for the solidarity, irrespective of how rare this is from a politician. But fascism can't be reduced to displaced economic concerns. It doesn't stand up analytically, it won't help politically or strategically, and I really wish the left (of which I'm part) wouldn't do this.

It's difficult to find empathy for a monster who described empathy as woke, and who worked so hard to incite violence in his lifetime. But I have empathy for his family, for the communities he sought to divide, for the lost people he gave a cause to, and for a nation sliding...
