That’s wonderful to hear! Alas, I definitely had *many* essays that read as if they were written by LLMs almost entirely the semester prior. Hence the blue book-scaffolded essay hybrid. My way of attempting to retain the writing skills building that I so value!

I should note that the writing was actually quite strong overall and I only suspected one student (out of around 25) of possibly relying on AI for generating their thesis - the quality of the analysis suffered as a result anyway so it was only to their detriment 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's certainly possible, but absolute control isn’t really feasible - if the student wants to memorize enough material to fill an hour-long session of writing then that's what they will do, unfortunately.

I switched to blue books for our first essay last spring. I scaffolded the assignment over the course of around 2 weeks, during which students selected essay topics, drafted thesis statements and outlines (which I offered feedback on), and they then wrote the essay in class. Overall, 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
