A student recommended Natural Reader to me, so I checked it out. Red flags appeared right away. The male voices are "confident, engaging, and formal" while the female ones are "calm, emotional, and soft." Gender stereotypes are generally unhelpful but nefarious when applied to educational tools.

Oh my God. I use this same image. A student thought it was hilarious when I explained it this way to them. I even drew teeth on the symbol because that's what our teachers did.

The Chicago English Corner launches on 1 March 2025. I'll be working my ass off on the transition from the previous site until then. :)
