These scales spill the secrets – count the rings. They can live up to 15 years, reaching 58 cm. 🌊 Ladies lead in growth rate after age 2. Dark lines are speedy summer growth and light regions are slow winter vibes. Watch the contrast fade in older scales.

Seeing human traits in animals, it’s #Anthropomorphism. Projecting feelings onto others is #Projection. Together, these can be a problem. We can end up with wrong assumptions. The snowy owls pictured here aren’t feeling the emotions in the captions, but it’s fun to play, isn’t it?

Not all leaves fall in autumn! Some trees, like these young American beech, hold onto their leaves all winter in a cool phenomenon called #marcescence. Maybe they are protecting leaf buds from deer 🦌 or providing fresh mulch to help retain moisture in the soil come spring? What do you think?

The mystery of Bennett's Bronze Bustle! A woman from MD found a surprise in an 1880s dress. Inside, words like "Bismark, omit, leafage" were found. A student cracked the code in 2018 as a 19th-century weather report! Was the dress worn by an early employee of the National Weather Service?

On June 5 1888, a 75-ton whale was captured off Cape Cod, to be the star attraction at Tolchester Beach opening week! Embalmed in Boston for $3,000, it shrank to 50 tons for the journey south. Preserved whales were a late 19th-century oddity. Thankfully, attitudes toward animal welfare have changed.

Kentucky had Daniel Boone. Tennessee had Davy Crockett. But did you know about our region’s own frontiersman, Meshach Browning? He lived from 1781 to 1859 and wrote his book, Forty-Four Years of the Life of a Hunter, still in print today. His rifle, is on display at the Smithsonian.
