I notice things for a living. Editorial director, Workman Kids; author of THE MAGIC WORDS: WRITING GREAT BOOKS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS and five picture books, most recently IT’S HARD TO BE A BABY; 6yo mom; Virgo/goofball. Opinions my own.
My 6yo just asked me if our local library had any of my picture books, so I showed him where to locate them on the shelves. He then pulled the two books, ran up to a random mom, and said “My mommy wrote these books!” 😆🥹🥰

The 6yo picked this up at a Little Free Library yesterday and we have no idea what it is. Anyone know? (Wrong answers also welcome!)

Waiting for the 6-year-old’s Character Day parade at school and I’ve seen three other women wearing witch hats. Clearly we need to form a coven.

This is the Vesuvio Bakery in SoHo, where I once bought a roll for dinner on my way to Film Forum, & the old Italian man behind the counter took my hand and said sorrowfully, “Such beautiful fingers. Do you play the piano? Young ladies don’t learn to play the piano anymore.”

If Mayor Mamdani’s city-run grocery stores work, I hope we get city-run coffee shops next…. There SHOULD be a coffee/snacks/meeting place here at Astor & Lafayette and it would be a worthy use of city funds to establish one for the community.

A boomer-age Christian I know who is mad at hell about Trump has created this poster for a #NoKings rally in the Midwest tomorrow

Behold its glory

The great tragedy of my day today . . . the treasure of my kitchen, ruined.

Discovered this 1980s favorite in a Little Free Library last night — TOP SECRET, by John Reynolds Gardiner, about a boy who discovers “human photosynthesis” & turns himself into a plant. It’s a kind of #kidlit that we’ve sort of moved away from, I think — 🧵+

At this point, I’ve seen more of these subway ads with anti-AI graffiti than without. New York is all right (perpetual).

These “jokes” draw on HARRY POTTER and THE EXORCIST, and none of them have to do with the actual movie. Punchlines & setups repeat, and the design is horrible.

I am getting it out of my house.

The 6yo was gifted this “K-POP DEMON HUNTERS Jokes and Riddles for Kids” book for his birthday by a well-meaning friend, and it’s just the sloppiest AI slop that ever slopped. Look at that demon! 1/2

Update: party was a great success; I should have used regular frosting instead of buttercream due to heat & transportation issues; Pop Rocks are a cross-generational hit in goody bags; I am exhausted.

Today is the 6yo’s (!!!) birthday party and I am hosting 30 people for a Minecraft party at a site I do not control: Pray for me.

On the flip side, I made this cool (not yet fully decorated) cake!

I just rediscovered this NSFCB (Not Safe for Children's Books) sonnet-ish I wrote in 2008 as a tribute to a friend, and it still delights me, so I hope it might delight you too.

Lest anyone think children are forgetting the classics, the 5yo inherited this book from a cousin last month & has pored over it ever since.
