"Tech is neutral" is really just the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" argument reused.

Sure, guns don't have agency. But they have what's called affordance - they are designed to make killing as easy as possible, which makes murder a viable* solution for a greater range of problems.

Video from our Defcon talk is now available:

The highest purpose of computers is to augment human intelligence, and to do so, our computers must be designed to challenge the way we think.

I always wondered how much of this was an assumption among successful Left Internet media that their absorption into the broadcast media was sufficient for getting their word out at scale. Meanwhile, their model should have been about networks (as it always has been)
I wrote a🧵 on Threads ab social + media ecosystems and how the right and left each use them. Tl;dr: networked communication seems much more halting on the left vs the right, which has invested in it for nearly a decade.

The influencer-to-elite pipeline - and worldbuilding - really matters.

"[computational engines] were prefigured on the plantation; as tech to control enslaved people. Issues like worker surveillance, workplace automation, and the computationally mediated restructuring of employment as gig work—echo the way that [this] thinking historically emerges as a mode of control"

Building a ubuntu box to run llama.cpp but still trying to figure out AIO coolers. As I sifted through tons of uninformed opinions on reddit I started thinking about LLM hallucinations differently

💯 support @ryanbroderick.bsky.social looking to the past (BBSes, usenet) to grok a post-twitter distributed future https://www.theinformation.com/articles/the-next-twitter-is-just-thousands-of-smaller-twitters?rc=eadxtp

imo we were almost there but vc money sucked all the talent into Big Social

So I guess now is as good a time as any to mention that I moved from NYC to Oakland two years ago to help take care of Tricia’s family. I haven’t really mentioned it anywhere. Because of the pandemic, I figured most people wouldn’t even notice.
