i still haven't slept but i did have connect some dots while watching an essay and sketching, so here's my 5 AM thoughts on gothic literature, and my philosophy of writing as a gothic romance author
holy shit watching a video on burnout and radical unproductivity which is a concept i've watched essays on and thought about a lot myself in recent years but he particularly made a connection i'd never made before, between that idea, and the hayao miyazaki quote about "ma, the space between claps" and the combination of like... the discussion of this horrific, crushing, all-encompassing Dread And Exhaustion that we experience in every aspect of our lives that makes even the things we love impossible to pursue and enjoy -- and the discussion of the "Gratuitous motion" that makes ghibli films feel so comforting and almost more real than reality, "not to advance a story but only to give the sense of time and place and who the characters are" that exact combination of exceedingly specific sensations is what gothic literature is in the last month or so I've had a weirdly high number of people ask me what kind of stuff I make and what kind of horror I like and I always struggle to explain to them what gothic literature is when they haven't actually read any of the classic novels or watched any of the recent films that I would add to that category I usually end up saying something like "gothic literature is different from the modern understanding of horror in that it isn't about things being frightening at any level. it's about perspective. it's about looking over a high cliff for a brief moment before stepping back, and even though you were never in any danger, no matter how far away you walk after that, everything will always feel a little smaller around you. It's about the sudden stark horror of the mundane when contrasted with something surreal or unfamiliar, but there's also this feeling of mourning, of wistful romance, and sometimes a feeling of comfort in spite of (or sometimes BECAUSE of) the tragic, monstrous elements. It's about giving the audience something too strange, too contradictory and complex, too beautiful and horrible and tragic and lovely and alluring and disgusting to digest, and then giving them enough space and silence that they have no choice but to try and digest it anyway" but like, even if someone actually is still listening to me after all of that, you know. it's a lot to pitch. the idea of pointing out "you live in a gothic horror" hadn't occurred to me before but it makes so much sense. And specifically, you live in a gothic horror, just look at the way you yearn for the comfort of silence and emptiness when you see a ghibli animation you have seen something alien and lovely that has made the mundane realities of your existence all the more monstrous in comparison. that is the beating heart of gothic literature
