Fabulous talk today by @nadinelavan.bsky.social today at the @mrccbu.bsky.social on forming first impressions of voices, investigated both with behavioral and EEG techniques. We form first impressions SO quickly!

Went to a fantastic #musicology seminar at @cambridgeuni.bsky.social music department yesterday about Alma Mahler-Werfel (1879-1964), a Viennese composer (who happened to be Gustav Mahler’s wife). Grateful to Dr Genevieve Arkle for the fantastic foray into her life and work! #femalecomposers

In this 3rd page of the report, you can see the references on which D Kayser worked with A Djourno that are relevant for the device implanted in 1957, indicating that she had contributed to the work background over multiple years. Unfortunately I don’t know anything else about her, but she existed!

D Kayser is listed on this and the previous report of the first cochlear implant (in March 1957 in Paris) as providing technical collaboration. Many women at the time were unable to complete PhDs of their own and worked in research labs as “Research Technicians” in order to be involved in science.

In the spirit of #InternationalWomensDay I thought I’d share a reference for the original #cochlearimplant - Djourno & Eyriès are the duo generally credited with this invention in 1957, but a Mademoiselle Daniele Kayser is also referenced, and is a named co-author on several previous references!

Such a pleasure to present at the MWM for the Association for Research in Otolaryngology 2025 in a session on cochlear health and biomarkers after implantation with these fantastic scientists! #ARO2025 #cochlearimplant #conferencing

We also observed an unexpected effect where artificially increasing current spread (“blurring”) caused an increase in current spread towards the apical portion of the arrays, but not when applied toward the basal portion - possibly as a result of cochlear anatomy
