Come find me at booth 408 in the exhibition at #SSP2025 if you want to learn more about how we are unmasking and reporting on your anonymous visitors, to help demonstrate the effectiveness of your science communication and shape your content strategy.

My domino mints are a limited edition so come by early if you want some! They are random though and not a proper set so maybe don’t look too closely if that might trigger you. Wish I’d remembered to bring an actual box of dominoes! #ssp2025

I hope you’ll be wearing the shark suit for tomorrow’s talk @whysharksmatter.bsky.social ??! #ssp2025

“Half of all public science engagement is based on just shouting facts. It doesn’t work.” @whysharksmatter.bsky.social at #ssp2025 on how vital it is to communicate science purposefully and effectively and not just within academia

Academics are nervous about media relations - being misinterpreted or misquoted says @emmayhnell.bsky.social at #uksg2025 but “we need to inspire the next generation” and get better at measuring the wider impact of research and communication

Christian Box says it’s partly about “the difference we can make” but also the risk of NOT doing science communication in a world where research funding is under threat #uksg2025

You may think of me as a scholarly publishing geek. But I can also be geeky on other topics! Such as “UK towns named in Beatles songs”. Which apparently is interesting enough to merit publication in The Times

Great post on "what to know before you go" to the @uksg.bsky.social conference. The main one would of course be Don't Forget To REGISTER!!! Pretty much last chance now -> www.uksg.org/events/confe...

I love a louring sky, and sunlight popping against that sort of blue grey. Nature’s finest earlier today echoed by the glowing windows of the Sheldonian this evening 😊

When we talk about change in scholarly communication, there are a lot of intersecting parts that we have to be aware of, bring with us, etc says @drachiarelli.bsky.social at #UKSGForum2024 - author of recent study "Towards Responsible Publishing" www.growkudos.com/projects/tow...

Fascinating to think about the many different boundaries, opportunities, perspectives, expectations and needs that come into play when cataloguing - all to "fuel better search and discovery". Jane Daniels at #UKSGForum2024

I did not so much enjoy playing Mallet's Mallet with @jsendall.bsky.social 😅 Although I was on Wac-A-Day once. In the Ask Carol @carolvorderman.bsky.social section. We went to the London Hippodrome and learned how to lasers work! #UKSGForum2024 #IrrelevantFacts

Fascinating set of talks to kick us off at #UKSGForum2024. I loved the "Blockbusters" approach to career mapping from Lucy Marr and Nicki Clarkson @unisouthampton.bsky.social An important reminder that careers move up, down, sideways. Shows of hands proved very few careers are linear!

I love that cartoon, and how frequently I still cite it. Right up there with the "truth handling gloves"

Super useful set of recommendations from @alicemeadows.bsky.social and colleagues, in the @scholarlykitchen.bsky.social today - how to make #research #funding more equitable. scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/09/12/i...

This week I shall mostly be travelling to / enjoying the bright lights of Manchester at the #ALPSP2023 conference. Thank you @godwyns.bsky.social and Becs Kirk for inviting me to talk about #disruption in #scholarlypublishing with Philip Koellinger (DeSci Labs) and Josh Nicholson (Scite).

My latest post in the @scholarlykitchen.bsky.social went live on Friday. Library branding. And earthquakes. And post-modern architecture. Including a super cool timelapse of a crane being installed on top of Te Matapihi, Wellington Central Library. scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/09/08/f...

That was a bit grumpy, sorry. I should add the good news that I'm really enjoying finding stuff that is properly relevant and actionable, and I am heartened by the role that research is playing and will continue to play in helping us meet our global challenges!
August 16, 2023 at 3:49 PM
Today I have been mostly mapping research publications against the Scholarly Development Goals. TL;DR: relevance is often overstated, actionability is often weak. Many articles etc flagged as #SDG X are often just "broadly related to topic X" rather than addressing the goal, target, indicators.
