On the stretch known as Gravesend Reach, a dredger, City Of London, is carrying building material up river. To the lower part of the image the wash of the ship makes small wavelets on the shore, while the ship itself is in near silhouette in the centre of the image. Again on the left, and also in silhouette, large mechanical structures, the coal excavators at Tilbury B power station. The power station and excavators have since been demolished and removed. Landscape format. A view of the south bank of the River Thames. The grass bank slants slowly upward from left to right; at the top of the bank and to the right of the image, a gray pony is grazing. Above the pony and filling the rest of the image, puffy clouds are massing. Beyond Gravesend, Kent, where the river defences end, the river bank is largely grassland, raised slightly before the foreshore, with lower marshland immediately inland. There was a herd (?) of semi-wild ponies, often numbering 30 -40, which roamed and grazed along several miles of the river. I passed them often; they weren't much interested in me so I'd say they were no risk...I don't know why they were there, although, as it's not unusual to place grazing animals on grassy places where people roam/hike/wander (they keep the grass short) I suppose that's why. I always enjoyed seeing and hearing them.

Landscape format. Taken on 10 September 2013. A car, parked at the corner of Albion Parade, Gravesend, Kent. Albion Parade is a street of run down workshops in Gravesend, close to the River Thames. Behind the car is a stucco wall, to uts left the same, but with a doorway, then a window, boarded over. The window has a cartoon figure with a roll-up cigarette in its mouth, pethaps a spliff...the car is parked on an area with square paving and tufts of grass. The car itself is a Russian Gaz 21 Volga, a medium size saloon, quite attractive to my eyes but in need of some renovation, like the place it is parked. I don't know what the car was doing there or what happened to it: I didn't see it again. I hope it was someone's project and it has been restored to its full glory. The River Thames, which Gravesend is 'upon' is the longest river entirely in England, as the Volga is the longest river in Russia. Taken using a Nikon D7000 with a 18.0-105.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens.

Landscape format, black and white. A bicycle in the River Thames, low tide, so resting on the mud, surrounded by water. Pieces of cloth are tangled up with the handlebars and behind the pedals. It may be there as the result of an innocent experiment to measure how far, if at all, a person can ride upon a tidal river, over water and/or deep mud; or it may have been put there by a miscreant, perhaps not even the owner of the bicycle. Landscape format. The lower half of the image shows two yellow dumper trucks parked on a flat expanse of white chalk with ridges of rough chalk either side. Above them is blue sky with wispy cloud. The site is a former factory (and before that, pleasure gardens...) cleared following the demolition of many buildings. The site has been covered over with layers of spoil from the digging of Crossrail in London and the Thames Tideway super sewer; the trucks are engaged in spreading chalk over dirt, followed by a final layer of more dirt. Now, a housing project, Cable Wharf (the factory made heavy duty cables) overlooking the River Thames. Shot on 21 July 2013 using a Nikon D7000 with 18.0-105.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 kt lens.

Landscape format. Taken above and behind a couple sitting by the River Thames, watching it pass. The lower part of the image shows metal fencing with, just above, the shoulders, heads and umbrellas of two people watching the river go by. Above the umbrellas, the river itself and its far bank. The two people are sitting at a small viewing platform between a (now demolished) cement factory and Kimberley Clark depot and factory, where Andrex is made. It is a fairly dreary spot, used by anglers and drinkers and photographers - Tilbury Docks is across the river and there are great views of shipping and boats going up and down the river. Landscape format. The River Thames in late afternoon/early evening, late summer/early autumn. The then Gravesend to Tilbury ferry returning to Gravesend to berth at West Street 'pier' - a pontoon near the river bank. Moored at the pontoon is its 'sister' ship Princess Pocahontas, a larger boat which stood in for Duchess M when it was being serviced. A short distance downriver a sailing barge is moored at Gravesend Town Pier pontoon, where the ferry would normally sail to and from. Both Duchess M and Princess Pocahontas have blue hulls with white superstructure. The ferry service no longer operates; it was, for several hundred years, the first or last crossing on the river. Landscape format. A view of the River Thames from Gravesend, Kent, on the south bank. The Gravesend pontoon, extending out from the left of the image, is attached to the Town Pier. Two sailing barges are moored at the pntoon, both with traditional red ochre sails, lowered. A house boat is moored alongside the closer of the barges. Sailing barges used to be the main carriers of freight up and down the river. Across the river is Tilbury B power station, still operating whn the photo was taken but soon to be "mothballed" and demolished. The site is now used as a roll on roll off freight terminal known as Tilbury 2; part of the main Tilbury Docks, which are upriver. This image taken 28 May 2012 using a Samsung NX100 and 20-50mm f/3.5-5.6 ED lens.

It is grey and overcast and while this is a colout photo, very little colour is visible. Since the picture was taken, 29 January 2012, the cranes have been removed and the wharf now serves a bitumen terminal. Samsung NX100 with 20-50mm f/3.5-5.6 ED lens.

The couple appear to be arm in arm and perhaps a little stooped, the beach hut is a mix of paneling, railing, posts and shadow. Taken autumn 1989 at Torquay's Princess Gardens. Landscape format; an evening view of a fountain with seafront lights behind. The fountain water sprays are lit in red and the long exposure shows them as blurred lines shooting into the air then falling back down sharply. Rows of coloured lights in the background, along the sea front, show as vague star shapes. The background is black, making the lights stand out. Taken on FujiChrome RDP100 35mm slide film, using an Olympus OM2SP. 'Digitized' using a Nikon D7000 with JJC adaptor, giving a RAW file edited in Photoshop.

A boy followed by a man walking on rocks at Daddyhole, Torquay, with the sea behind them. Landscape format; the figures are roughly central and dominate the picture; they are in near silhouette as is the rock they are walking on. The sea, behind them, is lit by direct sunlight and is composed my many circles or 'doughnuts' caused by the lens in use, a 500mm 'catadioptric' or mirror lens, made by Tamron. Strong out of focus highlights are shown as rings due to the lens' construction. The rings are uniform in size but of differing brightness and overlap. Taken using an Olympus OM2SP camera with Kodak Ektachrome EPR100 slide film, self processed in E6 chemicals. I'm not sure what device I used to scan the slide but probably an Epson scanner.

Taken in 1988. Landscape format: the Old Course at St Andrews, the most famous gold course in the world...lower half of the photo shows the Swilken Burn, from the bottom right of the image, moving diagonally across and leading to the stone built Swilken Bridge and behind that the golf course leading to the Old Course Hotel and above that a blue sky with a light sliver of cloud across it. I knew the bridge as "Swilken" when growing up - there are other spellings. I'm older than the hotel and remember it being considered an eyesore when new: no idea how it's regarded now !

A view along the Fife coast from Pittenweem to St Monans: 2 of the East Neuk fishing villages the area is famous for. Landscape format, the lower half of the image is rocks and sea, with the light shining directly on the water, making it very bright against the near black of the rocks. The upper half of the image shows St Monans and its building on the right of the image, with the land falling toward the sea; the most prominent building may be St Monans Windmill. The rest of the image is sky. The whole image is shades of orange and brown, indicating I probably used a Cokin filter (they were popular, then). Shot using an Olympus OM1n, 50mm standard lens, FujiChrome RFP50 slide film, self processed in E6 chemicals. 'Digitized' using a Nikon D7000 and JJC adaptor. For anyone who has read this far, name the founding member of the Rolling Stones who was born in Pittenweem ?

Taken autumn 1990. A lone figure, shot from behind, on the riverside walk by the River Tay, near Broughty Ferry. Landscape format; the figure is to the right of the image, in near silhouette, wearing a suit, hands in trouser pockets. Walking along a concrete path that crosses the frame diagonally, roughlt from bottom left to 1/3 up the right side. The the figure's left is river, blue, with out of focus highlights. The highlights are shown as small, white rings or 'doughnuts', a characteristic of the Tamron lens used to take the photo: a 500mm 'catadioptric' or mirror lens, light and compact, its design caused the highlights to take on this ship - you either like or don't like it ! Camera was an Olympus OM2SP, film was Fuji Velvia - then quite new.

A cottage just outside Crail, one of the East Neuk villages on the coast of Fife, Scotland. Landscape format: the photo shows a single cottage surrounded by a simple fence, on an area of flat land just above the shore. The cottage is simple with chimneys at either end and whitewashed; behind it, a field of cattle and to its right a shed and a ruin, perhaps another cottage. In the foreground, a bank of gorse on the ascending hillside. Taken with an Olympus OM2SP on Kodak Technical Pan, developed in Technidol. Scanned using a Canon MG8150, TIFF file edited in Photoshop.

Taken in summer/autumn 1989. Landscape format: two figures in silhouette at Plymouth Hoe, with several other silhouetted figures in the background, ghostly due to limited focus depth of the lens. The figures are brownish yellow, as are their shadows. The frame is largely yellow, dark in the lower part of the frame, brightening as you move up the frame. Shot was an Olympus OM2SP camera and Tamrom 500mm "mirror" lens; when shooting against the light, as here, it was perfectly possible to hand hold the lens which was light and compact. It came with a set of filters, one of which was yellow (presumably for B&W photography) and which I may have fitted here, but I don't remember. The slide was "Digitised" 2 years ago using a Nikon D7000 and JJC adaptor set.

Landscape format: a woman sitting on a folding chair looking toward Sutton Habour; she has a shopping trolley to her right. The boats and buildings of the harbour are out of focus ahead of her. She may be painting or drawing. Taken on an Olympus OM2SP with 35-70mm lens, using Ektachrome EPP100 slide film, self developed in standard E6 chemical. "Digitized" using a JJC adaptor set.
