COP30 is the first COP in years where protest has even been permitted, but even so it's clearly a process where the voices of the perpetrators are welcomed but those of the victims are sidelined

The protestors of yesteryear are revered as heroes, there are statues of them in Parliament Square

Today's protestors are locked up

I love this action by Greenpeace www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/monumen...

No, it was Greenpeace's Save the Whales campaign

They bypassed formal channels entirely and took to sea, taking direct action to get between the whalers and their prey and expose the brutality to the world

The public concern it stimulated formed the bedrock for everything that followed

This new reconstruction of global whale biomass shows that countries can successfully tackle environmental problems when they come together

But it's a story with an under-recognised hero

In 1850 the weight of all the world's wild mammals equalled the weight of humans and our livestock

Today they are outweighed 1 to 20

Here's something that's not talked about enough

The air pollution from burning fossil fuels kills an estimated 10 million people a year

1 in 6 deaths is caused by fossil fuels

Yes, and how do you know that the climate has changed before?

Erm, I listened to the climate scientists

Is the climate system more sensitive to CO2 than we thought?

What were the impacts of this summer's heatwaves, and how can cities adapt?

Will extreme weather shocks catalyse climate action?

Of all the nonsensical claims in the climate denial motion Reform will submit to Kent County Council today, perhaps the most absurd is the claim that there's no evidence for mass bleaching of coral reefs

That's like saying there's no evidence for the existence of the Reform Party

My favourite bit was when they explained that a rise in global CO2 concentrations from 230 ppm to 420 ppm was equivalent to "adding one person to a full Royal Albert Hall"

To me it seems like it has almost doubled, but I don't think maths is their strong suit

Conservation's great at dealing with the impacts of nature destruction but we really need to address the drivers too

Thats's where political ecology comes in, so this is essential reading for all conservationists

Recent research shows that the potential of both carbon capture & storage and ecosystem restoration to mitigate climate change have been greatly over-estimated

It is not going to be possible to suck all that carbon out of the sky once it's up there

We have onlu one option: stop burning stuff

New research from @steveclimate.bsky.social shows that MPs support climate action, but don't do much about it because it's not politically 'pragmatic'

Of course it's not pragmatic, it's the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced!

Politics can't fix this - but Citizens' Assemblies might

New research demonstrating a shift in online climate misinformation

Rather than denying climate science, this 'new denial' comprises "attacks that seek to undermine and cast doubt on proposed climate solutions and those who support them."

Elders really don't like drought, and for years now seem to be struggling on Norfolk's most well-drained soils

But, paradoxically, I wonder whether they might be better placed to adapt to rapid climate change than many of our other native trees

Two reasons...

Carbon capture lobbyists spent $950 million on the US government in 2005-2024, and had contact with 'high-ranking government officials' over 50,000 times

89% of it was funded by fossil fuel interests, not the industries used to justify CCS

Conservation is all about preventing or reversing change to conserve the biodiversity we have. It's right there in the name

But in the era of rapid climate change that's an impossible goal

We desperately need to rethink what we're trying to achieve
