Long term runner & spaniel chaser, A314875. Dartmoorphile, Mountain dreamer. Retired real coffee and real bread business owner, now a Rutland allotmenteer. Following QPR since 1966. Family man with a son in 🇨🇭 and daughter an NHS surgeon
I peeled, cored chopped and froze another 2 kgs of these beauties this morning. We've given away over a hundred and there's over a hundred to go. Two trees. An amazing and scrumptious harvest this year.

Apparently the remembrance poppy is being weaponised by the far right like the St George's flag. So here's a 70 year old absolute weapon sporting the poppy at parkrun on remembrance weekend. #oblivious 😆

Future task inevitability. A mercurial genius on our allotments site designed, installed and maintained a well water storage and distribution system using scavenged materials. He has passed away suddenly and I think I will have to become de facto hydrologist. OMG 😳

It's all getting a bit Tudors & Stuarts. How about the tower for the "accomodation arrangements"?

Cocoa likes the South West Coast path. He has accompanied me for around 800 miles on it over the years since we first stepped on it in 2015. It's always great to go back and be a bit nostalgic. This was the old boy - still a pup at heart, if not in head - during our trip.

The setting of our Chough encounter. Quite incredible how confident these rare birds were given we had our dog Cocoa with us.

We were in Cornwall for a few days a week or so ago.
And I saw Choughs.
Twice.
These two were literally arms length away in the dunes at Gwithian Towans above 3 mile beach.
The others were wheeling over Lizard point.
Twitchers know how magical this is. What a privilege.

Event 2 of Cocoa's second return to parkrun. I tolerate his lack of desire to trot at much under 7' x km going out, and he tolerates my lack of ability to run 5's coming back! Game of two halves indeed. And Happy Birthday to the home parkrun at Rutland Water and all the lovely volunteers.

And done.

Progressing....

Our freezer is absolutely chock a block with roasted tomato sauce from the allotment. Today the focus shifts to the green tomato chutney team! All plants stripped before tomorrow's forecast storms.

Two pictures taken from the British Athletics Instagram feed. Mark Cavendish might have to move over now the Isle of Man has another world champion and world record holder. Many congratulations to Sarah Webster and her team mates.

Following warm weather beach training in Cornwall, Cocoa made a parkrun return at Rutland Water this morning. Huge negative splits were a given, as was the assumption that every dangling hand held a treat for him. 🤣

I visited Herculaneum yesterday. (in the middle of the modern town Ercolano, south of Naples) It's an astonishing place, bearing witness to the ability of earth's forces to totally upend human civilisation in an instant.

If, like me, you have followed Kilian's career this past 15 years or so, you'd have thought last year's traverse of the Alps' 4000m peaks was his magnum opus. But this? Another level again. No refuges, cowbells or lush valleys as comfort. Just rock and relentless miles on the bike. In awe. Again!

I'm totally engrossed in my current read by @adamweymouth.bsky.social - but really struggling to comprehend how this item can share virtually all his genes with the subject matter!

Finally, at the end, me sort of convincing myself "I can still enjoy this stuff", whilst commiserating with a fellow participant who had to retire at checkpoint 3. Cocoa wonders what I've been up to. I wonder if he remembers he once trotted round a 55 km LDWA challenge event?

A few "One Foot in the Gargrave' views.
September 7, 2025 at 8:29 AM
A lightning visit for us to the Yorkshire Dales yesterday. I managed to jog and hike round a stunning LDWA challenge event with 200 other like minded folks. There's nothing more down to earth in trail running than this, and I only had one minor route "indiscretion". What a landscape it is up there.

Thanks to marvellous Swiss railways app, it's actually extremely easy. One train & then no. 9 bus. 😁

I've had Scott's book since 2018 I think. Anybody contemplating trying these mountain ultras would do well to get a copy.

When your team loses 7-1 to one managed by an ex Chelski icon, make jam. You can't throw things while gently stirring and fishing out Damson stones. 😬
August 23, 2025 at 7:45 PM
Tougher skins on the Tomatoes at the latest harvest but we are now in full glut mode here, and the sauce they are making is intense. 🍅🍅🍅

It's more like Italy than Rutland at the moment on our allotment plot. I'm so glad I gambled on early planting this year.
