Day 21: Honorable Mentions
A few other albums that I loved growing up but couldn’t quite put in my top 20.
Day 21: Honorable Mentions
A few other albums that I loved growing up but couldn’t quite put in my top 20.
Day 20: Punk Goes 90s
A culmination of so many things that I loved—pop punk, screamo, 90s music—in new, reimagined songs. I know the trend now of “make a pop/rap song heavy or rock” is kinda cliche now but when the Punk Goes… series started it was a revelation.

Day 19: Underoath - They’re Only Chasing Safety
Needed a screamo album on this list, this was one of the earliest and best (for me) I could think of. Pop sensibilities, emotive screams, cleanest of clean vocals, and heavy guitars? Yes please! Synths were the cherry on top

Day 18: Nirvana - Nevermind
Talk about cliche, but I was not immune to having a grunge/classic rock phase. Was first introduced when friends at a summer camp wanted to cover Smells Like Teen Spirit which I had never heard 😅 It was and remains revolutionary.

Day 17: Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
This had me convinced 86% of songs would be improved by adding a brass section. Looking back? Still holds true. Another example showing how musical non-traditional instruments can be on a rock song (banjo ftw!).

Day 16: P!ATD - A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
Angsty theater kid pop punk? Orchestral arrangements and Sound of Music allusions with vivid story telling? On Fueled by Ramen with weird ass music videos? Sign me tf up!

Day 15: Mayday Parade - Tales Told By Dead Friends
I’ll readily admit ALIR is a better but this EP was my first introduction to Jason Lancaster’s voice and that’s hard to shake in terms of formative experiences. As is the first time hearing Three Cheers for Five Years.

Day 14: Eagles - Greatest Hits
I had to include a Dad Special. Although I quickly departed in taste, he introduced me to some of the classics—Beatles, Springsteen, etc. But this was a CD that lived in the car and played often. Find me better harmonies—go ahead, I’ll wait!

Day 13: SOAD - Toxicity
Borrowed this CD from a friend while on the bus and to say it was eye opening is probably an understatement. Initially drawn to the hits, it exposed me to songs with a MESSAGE even a young, dumb me couldn’t miss. And got heavy & weird while doing it

Day 12: TBS - Tell All Your Friends
Honestly, mics are for singing AND for swinging. If it isn’t obvious, I REALLY like dual vocals, especially when one is more rough/dirty. Although it might not have been my first introduction to that dynamic, it’s one of my favorites.

Day 11: Brand New - Deja Entendu
Both of my tattoos are Deja related. It’s hard to go back and listen to now, but this album had a death grip on me for 10+ years. Every time I grab an acoustic, I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light is still the first thing I strum.

Day 10: Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Although I liked Meteora more, this was the one that originally got me hooked—radio hits with rap, metal, and screaming elements? Hell yeah! Don’t think it’s hyperbolic to say this was my entry point into heavier music like screamo.

Day 9: Green Day - International Superhits
It’s got a bunch of hits. Not sure I can muster up much else to say. Today sucks.

Day 8: Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
This is an album I can listen to front to back—musically & song-wise it’s fantastic. But this is one of the first that opened my eyes to effects and made me ask “How do I get THAT sound??” Pro Tip: The answer is not “with a Line 6 Spider” 😅

Day 7: 1997 - A Better View of the Rising Moon
This is my Thank You to Fuse for introducing me to so many bands like 1997. Come for the vocal harmonies, stay for the harmonica/mandolin/keyboards. From soft & sweet to happily upbeat to dark & heavy, this album has it all.

Day 6: Alkaline Trio - From Here to Infirmary
You ever discover a band from a game soundtrack? I knew of AK3 before Tony Hawk’s Underground but that was my first time really LISTENING to them. Armageddon opened up a whole new macabre, dark world. Crawl is a masterpiece.

Day 5: Fall Out Boy - TTTYG
Unlike Dean from @splitjawhc.bsky.social I actually understand how AMAZING this album is (check the Cuddlepunk podcast if you want to be enraged by the disrespect). The entire album is BEGGING to be screamed by you and some friends on a roadtrip.

Day 4: Third Eye Blind - s/t
This classic EMO album (come at me if you disagree, but know you’re wrong) is so much more than the hits. Honestly, the best songs are the non-radio tracks and The Background to God of Wine might be the best 3-song run in music history.

Day 3: Four Year Strong - Rise or Die Trying
Sticking with synths. But this time—Beardcore. Happy hardcore. Easycore. Flannels, riffs, & breakdowns. Can’t listen without getting hyped. With so much going on sonically, I don’t know how they make it work. But the blend is 😙🤌

Day 2: MCS - Commit This to Memory
This album has only hit harder as I’ve gotten older. It drew me in with the easily singable choruses, poppy synth, and insanely cool drumming then sneaks in some of the most dark, depressing songs & lyrics imaginable.

Day 1: Say Anything - …Is A Real Boy
This album shaped more of my music taste than anything before or since. Hooks. Chaos. Vitriol. Adulation. $5 words. Theatrics. Story telling. Less than pristine, fried vocals delivering the most biting self-criticism imaginable. Perfect
