I think this is a great omen for the future. Not just a move toward sanity as we approach 2026, but also long-term—some of those traditional GOP voters are never going to return to the party.

There are loads of conservative-leaning voters who identify as Republicans but are fairly centrist, and those voters are becoming highly disenchanted with Trumpism. Lots of eager Dem voters were the foundation of these victories, but line-crossing Republicans delivered the huge margins.

I personally checked in perhaps 150 voters. When their registration comes up on the screen, I can see their party affiliation. This was not due to lopsided turnout—there were still at least as many Republican voters as Dems. My takeaway:

Third: My precinct usually goes just right of center (Trump took the precinct in 2024, but only by a few votes). Tuesday's races were non-partisan, but of course the candidates had clear leanings. The good guys swept the ballot by huge margins—consistently around 2-to-1.

Second: In all the years I've done this, I've never had anyone ask to change party affiliation on the day. Tuesday, I was asked THREE times--all people registered as Republicans, wanting to renounce that affiliation.

(You can't change on the day, but also it didn't matter this election.)

First: Turnout was huge. Like, presidential-election sized. Double the most optimistic expectations of anyone working our precinct. People wanted to vote, even for "minor" races!

(The silver lining? There may be a few in the administration for whom the risk in attempting to destroy American democracy is too high. They’ve got to be thinking about an exit strategy, soon, before they’re dragged into actions the will DEFINITELY send them to jail if the coup fails.)

100%, and they know it, too. And after Tuesday they know they won’t win a fair election. So they have about six months to make sure there are never any more fair elections in the US. We have to be ready for what’s coming.
