This looks like one of the largest protests on Beach St. in weeks, where the city of Broadview is still enforcing a small “free speech” zone. It’s packed.

UVA received 3 letters from DOJ (2 on admissions, 1 on why DEI was not "eliminated" even though no board policy was adopted along those lines). They go to hire outside counsel but the state AG will only let them work with conservative lawyers, one of whom worked on project 2025!

We get the beginning signs that the board is working closely with the governor in order to make changes aligning with EOs that do not have the force of law (so complicity, not compliance) and throwing up administrative hurdles to upper admin communicating with the public.
Screenshot of the letter which reads: The trouble began at the March 2025 Board meeting, when we received a resolution regarding diversity,equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) that Governor Youngkin’s office drafted. This was the first time in myseven years that the Governor’s office had drafted a resolution on behalf of the Board. The original resolution was quite sweeping and filled with inflammatory rhetoric criticizing DEI, much of it lifted from President Trump’s executive order. After numerous edits and intense conversation, theresolution passed by the Board was fairly mild—so much so that the Board, which included fourmembers appointed by the previous, Democratic Governor, adopted the resolution unanimously. Wewere directed to dissolve “the DEI office” at UVA and move all permissible programs to anotherinstitutional home within the University, and we were to ensure that we were complying with anti-discrimination laws. We were specifically told by an official in the Governor’s office that we were notbeing directed to fire anyone. We were told to update the Board within 30 days. We had also prepared a message to our community to describe the work we had done. At the same time,external critics interpreted our silence as inaction. We explained to Board members that we were beingplaced in an untenable position, given that we could not implement any changes if we could not evendiscuss them publicly. We also pointed out that the Board had merely asked for an update, which implied that more work could still be done. But they nonetheless insisted that we remain quiet. So began the narrative that we were recalcitrant and resistant to any changes, which was not true but wouldcontinue up and through my forced resignation.

One Signal, $29 (304p) ISBN 978-1-66804-794-1 McCoy, a history professor at West Virginia University, debuts with an expansive and energetic celebration of De La Soul’s contributions to hip-hop. Formed on Long Island in 1988 by Kelvin “Posnudos” Mercer, David “Trugoy” Joliceur, and Vincent “Maseo” Mason,” De La Soul sampled older tracks, contemporary songs, TV shows, and more, taking a “collage approach” to song production that was highly innovative but left much of their music tied up in lawsuits and off streaming platforms until recently. That absence “left a gaping hole in the history of hip-hop culture,” McCoy writes, and he does an admirable job of filling it, highlighting how the group drew from unorthodox influences (they sampled Liberace and Hall & Oates in their music, and wore bell-bottoms and colorful button-ups) to interrogate Black masculinity (“They made it okay for young Black men... to be weird, quirky, and vulnerable”). The group also critiqued racial and economic inequality as well as the materialism and “death-dealing coolness” that were hallmarks of the era’s mainstream rap. McCoy weaves in personal recollections and a wealth of diverse sources, from bell hooks to Ralph Ellison, to explore how De La Soul emerged from and engaged with a complex moment in American and Black culture, and how their style and sound shaped the future of music.
