I don’t actually think i have scratchy fingers. 😅 but I did always manage to get scratches if I did ANYTHING at all that touched the emulsion, including the finger thing. Became paranoid about it after a while. 😅🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Huh. The finger thing always went badly for me. Maybe I have scratchy fingers. 😥

I shake/bang/wave around my metal reels to get as much excess as possible off before unrolling and hanging to dry. 😅😅😅

Awesome. The park darkroom had been closed for a couple decades and as a snottyteenager they paid me (actual money!) to get the darkroom running again and get set up to do all sorts of fun stuff and print with that behemoth 45mx.

I have a d2 in my basement and it’s great. But it’s not motorized! 😅

I know! 😅😅

Nah, not gonna mess with development.

Related to our earlier contact print convo, though, I could use a slower emulsion! I didn’t realize there was any silver chloride paper in production!

Possibly should be rated at .75??? If shooting paper negs

Well I have long been tempted to pickup a packard. I do have a lovely pneumatic external Silens shutter that i use constantly on my other 8x10 barrel lenses. But it’s too small.

I almost certainly won’t mess with making a doubled up nd for the back I’ll just buy a threaded nd for the front. 🤷‍♂️
November 10, 2025 at 5:10 AM
And yeah, most actual exposures would be longer.
November 10, 2025 at 2:03 AM
Yup.

I’d love to have a brand new packard. It’d be like getting a brand new Thornton-Pickard (though it’s also my understanding that there were former T-P employees making low-volume shutters remarkably late?).

But yes 1/2 is definitely doable with a cap, and the camera is rigid enough for it.
November 10, 2025 at 2:00 AM
...alternatvely, of course, I could try to get an actual shutter. 😅
November 10, 2025 at 1:49 AM
Right, I was close. I was sorta rounding up my metering this morning. 1/2s might be OK with lens cap method, though maybe Id want to make a more traditional cap-shutter (ie press on and with a handle rather than the fiddly pinch one I have on there now that is hard to remove and replace cleanly.
November 10, 2025 at 1:49 AM
Oh yeah. That would probably be good. The rear element is bulbous but doesnt project past the edge of the mount.

I actually have some big Lee ND filter sheets floating around that I was using for cutting pack filters for 600 film in SX-70. Thats .6 nd, so Id have to layer two sheets. 😅
November 10, 2025 at 1:45 AM
SO, if it had been EV 15 in broad daylight, Id have needed 4 stops to be able to shoot a paper neg with the smallest f8 card? That would be an ND16???!?

(I may have done this wrong!)
November 10, 2025 at 1:38 AM
But I believe the lens only came with waterhouse stops for 1.6-f8? Reinhold said it performs poorly at smaller apertures?

On the other hand since this mostly for a laugh, Im shooting mostly paper negatives rated at ISO 6. So today I fudged it to 1s@f8 (my smallest card) metered at (I think?) EV11?
November 10, 2025 at 1:38 AM
I guess surprisingly it DOES take filters so maybe an ND is all I need.
November 10, 2025 at 12:44 AM
Though I am going to run into a problem that the lens might be too fast for lots of shooting outdoors! Need slow shutter speeds for lens-cap shutter method, BUT the lens is fast! It was quite overcast today but I was pressed to get even a 1s exposure with the smallest aperture card!

😬
November 10, 2025 at 12:42 AM
This was my first time shooting this lens outdoors to really get a sense of it. I think I can really get behind it. I think its strengths and also limits are going to be similar to what I love about the Chroma double glass 24mm f11 ltm lens.

(Though literally it has 1/2 as many elements! 😅🤷‍♂️😅)
November 10, 2025 at 12:37 AM
I’m not entirely sure if I bumped the aperture card out of place or didn’t get the front standard centered! I think the former based on the shape. 😅

beautiful old Beseler 45 to make nice prints for display of the museum of lots of cool stuff around the construction of the park by CCC and WPA. It was super fun and such a cool archive to work in/with. Pretty sure some of my prints are still on display there 25 years later. 😅
