this one got me good during the intro when it lowkey called simon montefiore's famous reinterpretation of Young Stalin an orientalist fanfic character. well yeah, that's TRUE mister kotkin, but i had SUUUCH a crush on him when i was 23!!!

tbh this won the booker so what do i know? but the faulkner-esque POV structure rly clashed w/ the length imo. breathtaking kaleidoscopic landscapes that cohere to sea foam. contained at least one or two smaller books i enjoyed desperately. v excited to read 'black leopard, red wolf'
