This irks me to no end. Most STEM roles don't need geniuses. Once you pass a threshold of competence, everything comes down to how well do you write proposals/documentation and how pleasant are you to work with?

I recently read a book about punishment in 16th century Nuremberg and was struck by the consensus of the day that, barring extraordinary circumstances, imprisonment of longer than 2 weeks was inhumane. Breaking on the wheel was fine though.

These conversations are always weird for me. Everything about how these models were trained and deployed is incredibly unethical. And they enrich and empower some of the worst people in the world.

BUT from a research perspective they are fascinating. In another world they could do a lot of good.

Off the top of my head, the latest Chinese model DeepSeek-OCR can take images and texts as inputs and use both as context simultaneously. And across the boards, models can take longer inputs all the time.
