Uhhhhhhhh, so funny story. My WIP so far only uses the word "trail" in a VERY NSFW context, so I've applied the "adult" label for people who do not wish to read that kinda passage. Also fun fact: this is the passage where we find out that Vera is not dyadic/cis!

A passage from Chapter One of BENEATH A STAR-SHATTERED SKY. (CW: NSFW PASSAGE) It reads: "Oh, what I’d give for the chance to explore you to my heart’s content, Jezebel thought with a small huff. The tip of her tail squirmed as she imagined herself rising up onto all fours and slowly padding towards Vera with smooth, confident steps. First, she’d gently nudge Vera over onto her back with her snout, and then warmly pin her down by hooking her forelegs around the Veluzthithar’s hips. She’d lean down and pepper gentle nibbles and kisses beneath her chin down her neck to steal her breath and make her melt beneath her affection. Next, she’d bury her snout right below Vera’s hefty breasts and tease her with slow licks, kisses, nudges and nibbles—eliciting delightful little huffs, giggles, and squirms all the while. She’d finally trail her nose right down Vera’s belly and let herself get lost within her Flight-Partner’s pleasant, natural scent, until she reached that fluffy sheath of hers between her legs. And then…!"

This is how you know that you have a solid argument and aren't just a loser melting down on the internet because someone dismantled your attempt to equate the idea of smut with slop.

Jezebel sailed upon a hollow sky, wings held aloft by the wind and suspended in a sunbeam. Even though she lacked the scales of many other dragons, she shone no less brightly. She had an impeccable coat of thick, well–groomed fur—dark evergreen along her back and soft-white along her underbelly. Her rich golden-yellow eyes blazed prominently against dark highlights, granting her the visage of authority. Instead of skin-membranes, her large wings were feathered much like a bird-of-prey’s. Behind her brow and above her fluffy, triangular ears sat a pair of black horns that curved back to protect the nape of her neck before curving up and out again about a third of the way down their length. Taken altogether, she was a dragoness to envy—who else but the Court of Aroáztha could hope to compare? Using her powerful tail as a rudder, she adjusted course to slip into a smoother pocket of air. As she settled into place, she flapped her wings a couple times to maintain her speed and altitude and the fluffy tip of her tail twitched back and forth with instinctive, minute adjustments. She coasted along invisible tides of wind with all the confidence of a master captain faced with the infinite horizon.

Jezebel growled to herself, kneading her talons into the dirt again to soothe herself. 'Then there is only one choice I can make. I must be swift, direct, and decisive. I will need to catch you off-balance, and trust that you will accept my offer and find happiness beneath my wings. If I could just break through the wall you’ve built around yourself, then I’ll have you exactly where I want you to be.' 'But how?' As if in response, an old proverb she had heard as a young fledgling—and many times thereafter—whispered its wisdom in her ear: 'A good huntress can ambush her prey and, through power and strength, overwhelm it. A great huntress can lie in wait and, through cunning and patience, catch their prey within her trap. A masterful huntress can convince her prey it isn’t prey at all until she has already sunk her claws into its flesh and there is no way to escape her grasp.' With that, the pieces fell into place. Jezebel sat up once again with a shuffle of her wings to try to contain a growing nervous anticipation. 'If you are too afraid to move forward, then I will just have to convince you to come a little bit closer… and then pull you in. After all—'she thought with smug satisfaction—'you are talented at a great many things, Vera, but a poker face isn’t one of them.'

'Perhaps taking in a bit more sun wouldn’t hurt,' she told herself as she turned her back on the door. That was when she saw her old brush, still lying on the porch-deck next to the steps. Half-stunned with disbelief, she walked over and bent down to pick up the brush. Her legs gave out and she sunk onto the wooden deck. Her shoulders shook as she broke down into wretched, heaving sobs that robbed her of all breath. The dull handle in her hands cut her soul with the razor edge of a knife and she bled profusely. As she sat there, curled tight around that final fragment of her long-abandoned past, she became acutely aware of the spinning of the world, and she dared not open her eyes to watch. She fought with herself for a moment in vain, gritting her beak and rapidly taking deep breaths to help the sharp pain she felt in her chest subside. As her grief eventually receded just enough to no longer feel so overwhelming, her breathing evened out, and she crawled back to center. Each steady breath gave her strength, and the spinning slowed to a standstill. Once she had the courage to open her eyes again, the world had returned to normal. The birds still called out from the trees, the leaves whispered amongst themselves in the breeze, and the warm rays shone just beyond the front steps. She was okay.

"The dragon opened her eyes, a pair of luminescent blue eyes drowning out her sclera and pupils with the brilliance of their supernatural glow. “Hejelzthen, Daughter of Avéru.” Her voice was rich, calm, and smooth—it held all the cadence of one who could hold dominion over all the world, but chose a greater purpose still. The Veluzthithar stumbled over herself in her attempt to reply. “I—uh—I—I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb your moment of peace, Dragon.” She was frozen in a crouch, her body tense as if she wished to flee for the forest yet compelled to stay, quailing beneath the dragon’s glacial, perceptive stare. “Do not be afraid, for you stand upon sacred ground. No harm will come to you here, you have my word.” The dragon spoke without malice or condescension, nor even a hint of impatience at having been interrupted." "The Veluzthithar looked around herself, only now understanding what she was looking at. Unlike the forest surrounding the grove she was standing in, the clearing was completely devoid of snow. The wild mountain grass swayed beneath the faintest breath of the wind, green and lively as if it had just rained the night before. Golden dandelions, delicate mountain bluebells, and white daisies stood in full blossom, even in the heart of the dying of the year. And from the dragon at the center of the clearing, an inexplicable warmth radiated outward—an invisible mirage of the memory of summer. She straightened up, but did not let her guard down. “Upon whose authority do you swear?” The dragon’s voice rose in reply, and others could be heard beneath it—a multitude of gentle, fluttering whispers that made the Veluzthithar’s fur stand on end. “I swear it upon my soul in the presence of Ashrukíva, that She will hold me to account.” The treetops rippled in an unnatural breeze as the words were spoken, and the oath was given the weight of binding finality. The Veluzthithar’s nerves resonated unbearably with this strange, undeniable power. “You speak the Arbiter’s name so freely?” she asked, her voice quailing with a new kind of fear. The dragon dipped her head. “Aye. I am Her representative and humble disciple.” Even as she spoke, the fiery glow faded back into irises which held all the warmth of summer’s sky and the cool clarity of a waterfall pool in equal measure. “What is your name, Daughter of Avéru?”

"Her hindpaws hit the ground first, absorbing much of the shock with bent joints and flexed muscles, before her forelegs came down as well—making her officially grounded. With a few running steps to bring herself to a stop, Jezebel nestled her wings up to her sides and shook out her long, black mane from her ears. Once she was satisfied, she turned and approached the crackling fire. Anxious joy crept up into her chest as she laid her eyes on her Flight-Partner, Vera. "Vera was a Veluzthithar who, like the rest of her kind, stood upright upon two legs instead of four and had a light gray beak instead of a muzzle. Compared to Jezebel, she was rather small—when standing side-by-side, her shoulders were just a few inches shy of level with Jezebel’s. Her earthy plumage and long, brunette hair blazed in the fading summer light, much like the great eagles of the Southern Isles. Her green eyes stood out, and not just from their contrast with her feathers. Jezebel had rarely ever seen a gaze so expressive and yet so sharply perceptive. She knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that if Vera had chosen a path that took her to the Imperial Court, she could easily command their attention with her radiance and then cut them all down with a stare." After a moment, however, she flicked the tip of her long, fluffy tail and turned to look back over her shoulder. "Jezebel felt whatever remaining tension within herself melt as she smiled in return. She settled down onto her haunches just behind the shorter avian woman, leaning down to softly nuzzle her between the ears. “Hello there, pretty bird. It’s a beautiful evening, up above the trees. I wish you were with me to enjoy it.” "

It reads: "In the heart of the desert lies a city named Death By the shores of a great lake—the jewel in the rusty crown; It slumbers in the early-morning sun, laying at the feet of mountains Like a desert wolf after gorging itself on some strange carcass. And even now, as I turn back to look at it Placed within the cage of memory in the sanctuary of my own mind, I do not miss that city. I do not miss it for all its beauty and all its hubris, Its monumental spires defying the edict of death its place and name commands; I do not miss it for all its people— The teeming masses of every kind as they scurry beneath the open, pastel skies. And I will not miss it for the supernatural sunsets that scorch themselves upon the stones As it does in the eye of my mind in my dreams Where I stand Alone upon a forgotten dirt road Before a humble adobe house With the fragile beds of desert blossoms Who patiently await the dark To open up their petals And show the secrets of their hearts."

Her mother’s eyes widened slightly, and an expression of simultaneous joy and heartbreak crossed her face. “You found someone,” she whispered. “I had hoped… After what happened, I had prayed—I pleaded with Avéru that she would help you find someone. And you did.” Heavy tears fell down her cheek, even as she beamed at her daughter. “I’m so, so happy for you, and I would love nothing more than to meet her. What is her name?” Vera hesitated. “Jezebel.” “A beautiful name. What is she like?” “She’s everything I could ever possibly hope for, Mom,” Vera said softly. “What’s wrong? Does she not feel the same way?” Vera quickly shook her head. “No, no—it’s not that.” She quickly swallowed the knot forming in her stomach and shuffled her wings uncomfortably. “The feelings are definitely mutual. And if I’m honest, that almost feels worse.” “Ah.” That understanding smile flared up once again. “You aren’t afraid that you are falling in love again—you are afraid because you already have.” “Yes,” Vera whispered. “I’m afraid because I see two paths. Either I will lose her now, if I cannot accept her love despite my fears, or I will lose her later when the world comes crashing down on us once again and she is forced to choose which future to sacrifice. Either path will surely destroy me again—I know this within the depths of my heart. So how can I choose?” “And what if the world comes crashing down as you fear? Is it fair to assume that Jezebel will sacrifice you to save herself?” Vera’s mother flicked her ears with a small sigh. “You know as well as I that just because you are crushed beneath the weight of the world doesn’t mean you stop living in it. If she truly loves you, she will look to you to hold fast to her heart and show a way forward. And if you truly love her as well, you’ll hold onto her as tight as you can as well, no?”

A conversation thread on Bluesky. MARXISM NO JUSTSU: Yeah, it's too inflexible. That kind of shit is why marxism is the way forward, and while I respect the moxxy and intention of most anarchists, they rely on these mutable terms like "hierarchy" and "freedome" etc. much prefer the concrete - aka real and universal. Me: It's a lot more helpful if you recognize that anarchism uses Marxism as the foundation and is focused on implementation. Also, hierarchy IS real and universal. Marxists understand that in a class sense, but it pervades literally every aspect of our lives. [IN]TOLERANT LEFTIST (actual username): Anarchism is for libs.

On a break from my angry politics ranting: I finally finished reading The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, and it was genuinely solid. Mind-blowing? Not particularly. But really well done.

Honestly, I think if you want to write fantasy in the real world, you should read this book.

Using food to show where I grew up.

Vera shivered, her wingtips quivering and her ears pinned back against her head in shame. “I didn’t even say goodbye.” Vera’s mother gave a warm, heartbreaking smile. “I know.” She remained silent for a handful of seconds, considering her words before speaking them. “When I first cradled your egg in my arms, I was given a vision. In it, I saw that your future was clouded, tangled, and shrouded with so much uncertainty. But I knew one thing: whatever your future held, it would be so much more than what you could find in our little valley. And when you finally hatched and I first kissed you, I knew within my heart that in the end—someday—we would lose you.” She reluctantly withdrew her wing, breaking their embrace. Vera wiped her eyes once again with the back of her hand. “I’ve missed you so, so much.” “I’ve counted every day since the night we lost you.” “Nine years. That’s a long time to wander.” “Yes,” her mother replied. She gently leaned over, bringing her forepaws around the back of the Veluzthithar’s neck and giving her a kiss on the forehead. “But here we are—together again, at least for a little while.” Her forepaws gently rubbed along the back of Vera’s head and neck to comfort her. “And look at you—you have grown into the brave and beautiful Veluzthithar I knew you would be. Just like she was the day you came to me.” Vera took a sharp breath at that, before letting out an unhappy sigh. Her ears drooped once again. “I’ve found myself doubting that. I haven’t felt very brave lately.” The dragon gently lifted her daughter’s chin with a forepaw so their eyes would meet and gave her a warm, understanding smile. “Oh, my little bird—I can still see your flame burning within your heart. It still shines brighter than you know. You have gone far and endured much. Why then should you doubt yourself?” She gently rubbed her cheek with her forepaw-thumb. “I am so proud of how far you’ve come. You have rebuilt for yourself what others have tried to destroy, and you have risen on your wings far higher than I could have hoped.”
