Hermione huffs impatiently, knowing he's deliberately prolonging their flirting. She's been waiting for so long and is aching to snog the living daylights out of the wizard. She opens her mouth, the demand to please kiss her already on the tip of her tongue, when a new voice cuts in. "My darling dragon, if you keep making your pretty witch wait for you to snog her, I'll ask Theo, who is hiding behind the next shelf," - an amused snigger filters through - "to finish what you can't start." Feathers properly ruffled, Draco misses his mother's laughing countenance as he envelops Hermione in a possessive hold, slotting his mouth over the witch's. He ignores the whoops and catcalls of his friends, all emerging from various hiding spots in the Manor's library - a conversation about privacy would surely need to be had; some hexes wouldn't go amiss either — instead, drowning in the sensation and soft curves of the witch he's been dreaming of since fourth year.

He smirks at the thought, not because he doubts it, but because the unexpected but welcome friendship between his two favourite witches now means never winning a fight again. He's thrilled AND horrified. "What was I supposed to do? You weren't doing anything about it, and I know you like me Draco Malfoy. Don't even pretend you don't." "You know it's not because of that, Granger. I'm not —" She places a finger on his lips. "If you're about to go into a spiel about how you're not good enough, and how you think your reputation will affect me, let me stop you right there." Merlin, but the witch's confidence and bossiness would be the death of him. He shifts, subtly adjusting his trousers. Now was not the time to go down a horny spiral.

Unable to resist, he twists a curl around his finger. Curls he's been obsessed with for longer than he cares to admit. "I know, but that doesn't give her the right to trick pretty witches into getting stuck under the mistletoe with the likes of me." The teasing light in his eyes reveals exactly how much he doesn't mind. "Is it still tricking if the witch is willing and may have had a hand in it?" He stills at this, all playfulness evaporating under the weight of her confession. Draco's eyes hungrily trace her features, taking in honey-brown eyes framed by fluttering lashes, the light dusting of freckles across a cute button nose (it's a map he wants to spend the rest of his days exploring), and a pouty mouth just begging to be kissed. "Witch. Are you telling me you and my mother have been scheming to get me under the mistletoe?"

Soft grey eyes, unguarded and full of something she’s struggling to identify, threaten to unravel the very thread of her being. She is helpless to resist it. Resist him. She opens her mouth to respond but is silenced by a gentle press of his lips to hers. Oh. Oh. It isn’t a prank. Draco does like her. And he’s kissing her. He’s truly kissing her. Relief floods her veins and spurs her on. She parts her lips, allowing him to explore her mouth with disbelieving reverence; him silently acknowledging what a gift this is, and her confirming that he doesn’t have to explain himself further. Gripping his robes, she leans into the kiss, succumbing to searing heat as he responds to her silent request for more; his tongue creating a new kind of magic, one she now knows she wants to keep exploring. She makes a mental note to thank Theo for being the world’s worst secret-keeper.

Thick and uncomfortable, laden with words both wished to say but couldn’t. “Please, can you just look at me?” “You’re just trying to spare my feelings,” she mumbled, eyes glued to the ground. “And why, pray tell, would I need to do that Granger? It was my secret Theo revealed, not yours.” “Because there’s no way that what he said is true,” she said, wishing he’d leave already. “And what do you mean, trying to help you?” “I didn’t want you to find out that way, Granger. Theo tired of me not doing anything about it, so here I am. And I can think of only one way to make this as clear as possible since I don’t think words are enough.” He steps closer, and repeats his request, “Just once. Please, I promise I won’t bother you again.” The pleading in his voice makes her cave and look up at him. Merlin, has he always been so tall? And when did he get so close?

Years of wearing her intellect as both armour and weapon mean that she now struggles in post-war social settings, inevitably finding herself on the outside looking in. She hated parties, because floundering through social cues went hand-in-hand with her assuming the worst of people’s intentions. And tonight’s inter-house gathering was a nightmare because a loud-mouthed, chaotic Slytherin with meddlesome tendencies revealed secrets with shameless abandon; secrets he distributed like a box of Smarties, enhanced with a sonorous charm. Fun at Malfoy’s expense, yes. But, telling everyone that the platinum-haired prat’s been pining for her since 4th year? It feels like a cruel joke at her expense and is a painful reminder that her unwanted but burgeoning feelings would never be reciprocated. Draco’s horrified expression told her as much. And now here he is, perhaps out of pity. “Theo wasn’t lying, you know. He’s a menace of the highest order, but he was trying to help me, not embarrass you.”
