A 60-year-old woman sits across from me on the O-Train, letting out a big sigh of relief. She apologizes: “Sorry! I’m a driver, so it’s nice when you sit down after walking a bit. It’s hard when you’re used to driving yourself around, you know.”
I was impressed – few people make that connection.

Every spring, I get a new appreciation for Canadian winters that remove motorcycles from our streets and significantly reduce their numbers year-round. I don't notice when they're gone, but I definitely notice when they're back.
As a neuroscientist who studies urban stress, loud cars/motorcycles should be banned, or fined excessively until drivers reassess their need to broadcast their self esteem with unnecessary noise pollution. I don’t need to hear your car in my apartment.

“In reality, the duty to prevent collisions should fall on the road engineers, car companies, and public officials who create the system in which people drive, bike, or walk—and not on road users themselves.” — @davidzipper.bsky.social in @fastcompany.com #VisionZero
Who’s really to blame—and who isn’t—for America’s traffic death epidemic
Politicians love to say that ‘road safety is a shared responsibility,’ but the reality is that some groups have a much larger duty than others.
