I am once again thinking about Fritz Leiber's The Silver Eggheads.

Listen all of the continuity problems go away immediately if you just accept that James Bond is actually the codename for a series of reanimated bodies possessed by a single Lich whose insatiable hunger for violence, power, and pleasures of the flesh date back to the founding of the British Empire

When you play a TTRPG, do you treat the game mechanics as diegetic?

I have never played this way, but I just learned from TikTok that some people play DnD with characters knowing about class levels and stats.

To me that means they are roleplaying a character *in a litRPG setting.*

Personal Worldcon 2025 Highlights 1/?:

@davidbrin.bsky.social's "Writing Hard SF" workshop, where he described writing as 'incantatory magic' and 'a sadomasochistic relationship' between author & reader, and also threatened to slap us if we put a POV char's last name in the opening paragraph.

Well, that's my first Worldcon wrapped up. Just waiting for the train home now. I met a bunch of cool people, learned a lot, and am absolutely exhausted.

Not a huge event by headcount — but so information-dense. I'll be digesting for a while, and there's gonna be *more* as recorded panels go up.

I accidentally summoned some spam the other day.

I don't know if it's all AI shills, but some of it definitely is.

And it's depressing as hell to think about people getting tricked into paying a middleman flimflammer to deliver them unfiltered vomit from the plagiarism machine.

I accidentally had a successful test of a board game idea this weekend. Including someone asking about getting copies for resale.

Awesome.

Except I have no idea what I'm doing and my dev art looks like this, so to go to print I'd need to commission... 22 to 42 illustrations? Plus box art?

Bit of a longshot to post here, but I'm hosting a sort of "critique mixer" for the writing meetup I organize and I'm looking for links to guides on etiquette, how-to's, etc.

I'm writing my own guide for it too, but I'd love to have more to share with people. Drop a link if you have one?

The world is a nightmare but at least I can occasionally cheer myself up with cheeky little PRs. 225lb Zercher for shits and giggles on warmup and 415lb x1 back squat today. Might have more in me on a good day but I was having trouble hitting depth on it, so I'll be working on that for the next bit.

PseudoPod 962: Hemorrhage
It’s a dumb fight to pick, but I only learn that later. By the time they drag me out the back door of the bar, my face feels the way a Picasso painting looks. All rearranged, and probably the wrong…

Still thinking about litRPG (that novel I wrote in 2019-20 isn't going to edit itself).

Real world strength is a complex interplay of muscle, body proportion, neurology, and skill.

D&Dlike games abstract that into a single number.

LitRPGs make the abstractions diegetic.

Small deadlift PR today, 510lbs with versagrips and belt.

Deadlift is weird. It's the most fatiguing lift I do, heavy singles wipe me out, but it progresses on the least volume if I'm going heavy and staying consistent with my other lifts. Right now grip is a limiting factor even with the wraps 😔.

Given that my brain is 100% only obsessing over getting this novella ready to self-pub as a distraction from Everything Else, it would be nice if the Ol' Thinkmeat™ would choose between "you're gonna lose money on this, edit yourself & learn typesetting to save money," and "commission an audiobook."

Feels like I'm finally making progress in the gym again, for the first time in months.

Between COVID, an ear infection, trips out of the state, a sinus infection, the holidays, and... Everything, my training has been rough.

A new 5RM on bench isn't huge, but it really feels like a win today.

Growing as a writer sucks, because what do I mean I didn't understand the emotional core of the story I wrote? I'm really going to stand there and tell myself I expect *me* to do the work to fix it, too? Who the hell do I think I am? The gall of me!

For my friends who prefer audiobooks - this is one of my favorite litRPG series. A uniquely good and heartfelt take on the subgenre.
I hear the first book of my series, Apocalypse Parenting: Time to Play, is included Audible's 2-for-1 sale this week!

It's about a mom who has to teach her kids to fight monsters, while learning to survive herself. Many moms are heroes, but for most it's less literal.

I really wish my WIPs were in a good state to publish, because there are two beats that I keep revisiting and want everyone else to be thinking about too:
1) overcoming the temptation of despair and hopelessness
2) beating the shit out of the greedy old white men ruining things for everyone else.

Me: Look, it's not like I'm not reading, you know? Some books you gotta be in the right mood for and life is stressful!

Scientist in my living room: Your TBR is so massive it's collapsing into a black hole.

Me: Ok, New Year's Resolution, one TBR a month.

Scientist: We're all going to die.

I feel like I took a chainsaw to my novella.

I went from 35k to 15k, losing 1 named recurring character, 1 fight scene, 1 complete chapter, and most importantly -

A lot of what made it an enjoyable read.
