After a prolonged absence in a Messy Room I found the glasses I bought solely because they reminded me of Arnold from Yes Minister and the instant Dan walked through the door this evening he said "you look like Arnold from Yes Minister". Never known love like it.

Finished Poor Ghost! today - I really REALLY enjoyed this book. I loved the dry humour, the chippiness, the Manchester-ness, the way places and memories all tangled up in Luca's life story. It's so real!! Bravo @gabrielflynn.bsky.social 🫡

A five star review from Goodreads: This is an exceptionally engrossing read: the novel slips down easily, and it's possible to devour it in a day. This is partially attributable to its style, which marries sharp turns of phrase with exceptional dialogue: by turns witty, authentic, and a cross-section of clashing group and power dynamics as much as a celebration of the badinage that comes hand in hand with close friendship. But perhaps even more impressively, Cacoethes demands the reader's undivided and uninterrupted attention through its deft manipulation of time. Shifting seamlessly from past to present - from climactic, involving encounter to the breezy summations of a woman for whom hindsight is 20/20 even if it doesn't inform future actions - is a phenomenal sleight of hand. The result is a roiling collection of cliffhangers, an invitation for reader inference to fill in alluring gaps, and a breathtaking evocation of the blur in which most university students exist.
