NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated.

The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west).

I think it’s time to start seriously considering that Trump’s goal may be to weaken the United States. I can’t think of a single foreign policy initiative that Trump has undertaken in his first term or now that has strengthened our geopolitical position. I can think of many that have weakened us.

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company.

It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create.

They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms.

I’m happy to invest and/or help

Not the main story, but Trump has chosen a recently retired three-star General, John Caine, to replace Brown. Going back a very long time, Chiefs of Staff have had four stars -the highest rank- and related command experience before they became C.O.S.

This is sort of the skeleton key to understanding a lot of shit: there 100% is a non-trivial amount of inefficiency and waste in the federal bureaucracy, and most of it is a *direct result* of ‘reforms’ that are meant to assuage the people who complain about “waste and inefficiency in govt”
for decades the federal govt has bent over backwards to limit spending even on totally sensible things like office coffee, all so they can say your tax dollars aren't going to pay for coffee. and it was all for nothing bc elon is tweeting out conspiracy theories about non-existent fraud.

Vance and Musk attack judicial authority as Trump's agenda gets pushback from courts

Trump's immediate agenda is to destroy institutions (designed to overcome collective action problems surrounding our security and health). We will be less secure, weaker, and sicker for it.
The point of bringing in Hegseth, Gaetz and Gabbard is to burn it all to the ground. Senate: You must recognize this and stop it.

Articles of Impeachment now will divide Dems more than Republicans & seem silly to normie voters. Senate obstruction can be overcome by a majority and presiding officer (Vance). So it's media strategy at best. Litigation is OK, but depends on judges. Marching can be good if it builds social ties.
Here are the options on the table (which are not mutually exclusive):

1. House Dems bring articles of impeachment*

2. Senate Dems play constitutional hardball and obstruct everything

3. State AGs litigate (and prosecute) everything they can

4. Citizens march en mass

I seriously doubt that most independent voters who votes for Trump wanted him to end government oversight, liberate violent extremist and threaten to devastate the American higher education system.

As Trump considers eliminating FEMA, I’m reminded of an exchange between a state assembly rep from north eastern and a rep from the Las Vegas area. The northern rep said he was going to propose a bill that all taxes raised in a county had to be spent in that same county. The Las Vegas rep agreed!
